Okay. The three character references required on the NH CCW form...

Does anyone know if they actually contact those if there's no "doubts" on the application? I certainly haven't any reason why I'd be denied one, so I was wondering if that's just used if there's questions of truth on the form.

Not that I have any reason to want them not to (other than that it's an invasion of privacy), but if it means subjecting the friends I use to a cruiser in their driveway and a dinnertime cop at the door to ask them questions, or a mailed packet of essay questions to return...I really don't want to do that to friends! :)

Character references? So much for "live free or die."

Yeah. I was kind of surprised at that myself. There would have been NO license required if the bill had become law earlier this year to allow all NH citizens to carry concealed, and it passed in one side..the house, I believe, but Rosie O'Donnell and her "million moron march" came barging into the state and derailed it, so it was ruled Inexpedient to Legislate in the other side and died.

Of course, she has armed bodyguards for her kids, but that's somehow different. She'd even said that it is, because they're "trained". I really hate hypocrites...

Here's the main heading of the bill, which is one of the most profound recollections of the original purpose of the Constitution I've seen...Full Faith and Credit MEANING something.

-------------------------------------------
HB 454
This bill repeals certain statutes that require a license to carry a pistol or revolver. This bill also provides that under the Full Faith and Credit clause of the United States Constitution, New Hampshire residents shall not be required to obtain a license to carry a concealed weapon in any other state or territory of the United States.

None of my references were called. Heck, none were called for my Massachusetts permit when I got first got it, or renewed it. None were called for my Connecticut non-resident permit either.

It's just a formality. If it really torques you up, don't put anyone down and explain to the police chief that you don't like it. In my town, he'd probably say "whatever" and issue the permit anyway.

None of my references were contacted either. I also know that I was put down on two other apps and was never contacted. So, I dont think you have much to worry about.

Awesome! Thanks for the replies, that's just what I wanted to know.

So it turns out it's more of a nudge-nudge-wink thing to fend off anti-gun fussing. Good. :D

None of my references were called. The date on my permit indicates that NHSP issued the permit the same day it was received in the mail.

I don't recall if I was required to submit references as it was a couple years ago..

I filled out a form online with the local PD, and went and picked up my permit 2 weeks later from a obviously embittered clerk who reluctantly gave me that precious piece of paper after I paid my 10 bucks.

Most dept. do not check referance unless something turns up in the criminal record / local PD check that bears further investigation. But some deptartments do contact all referances.

The PD has only 14 days to either issue or reject the application for license for pistol or revolver.

I have a non resident NH permit and I don't recall being asked for character references on the application. If there was then none of them were contacted because I'd have heard about it.
