Hello,

This is my first post as I have just registered. I've been reading for a while and have found a HUGE amount of helpful information. I thought it was about time that I joined in the fun.

I haven't done a full search of the database so my apologies if this is going over plowed ground in some areas.

Well, I'm jumping into this hobby in a big way. I've just purchased, through Gunbroker, a new Icon in 30 TC. TC is currently running at $150.00 rebate so a good deal turned into a great deal and I jumped.

My logic for the 30 TC was that after looking at the ballistic tables it is no worse and sometimes better than a 308. I'm going to handload so I won't get the full Hornady factory magic powder benefit but a handloaded 150 g. 30 TC using BL C(2) and a handloaded 308 150 g. using BL C(2) are within a gnat's eyelash of each other. Same bullet, same powder, same performance. Only the 30 TC cases cost a lot more. For the deal I got I can buy a lot of expensive 30 TC cases and still be ahead of the game.

The opposition to the 30 TC seems to be that it is unneeded and doesn't do anything different. These are both probably true but it is here now and I got a good deal.

I may be singing a different tune in 10 years if the cartridge completely disappears, but for now I'm happy.

Supporting comments, opposing comments, and outright rants are welcome. Let me know your opinion.

Glad to be here on this informative board.

Dan

Pictures of the Icon or it didn't happen! :neener:

Glad to see another Icon owner though. They seem to be few and far between.

And welcome to the forum!

If you like the idea of having something different, perhaps downright rare, and are ready/willing/able to reload, then the 30 TC might be perfect for you.

Since the first wave of smokeless, rimless, bottle neck cartridges in the 1880-1890's, there has been a long list of marginal improvement cartridges, powder and metallurgy improvements driving most of this.

Congrats on the new Icon. I just purchased one a few weeks back. However, I went the safe route and chose the 308 Win. I had some problems with mine and had to send the rifle back to TC. They took care of my problem and I was back in business in 23 days I think it was. I have shot a couple different loads from mine and have been very happy thus far. The Icon seems to be a quality rifle.

If you are interested, here is a link to the specific problem I had with my Icon and what TC did to fix it: http://thehighroad.org/showthread.php?t=539868
