So I decide to upgrade to Leupold because I have heard good things.

Buy a Leupold 4-12x40mm VX2.

And it doesn't come with even a cheap plastic dust cover? A little disappointed that I now have to go out and buy lens caps for the thing to keep the dust off the lens.

Sigh.

Any recommendations? I like the flip ups but it looks like Midway only has them for the objective not the eyepiece . . . . .

Thanks - I tracked them down.

Just seems that such an expensive scope should have some basic plastic caps to keep dust off the lenses.

My cheapie Nikon's do, as well as some others. Even some cheapie binoculars have them.

The screw on ones are $20 for the pair - charge me for them so they are in the box.

Seems silly to me.

The only Leupolds that come with caps are the MKIV tacticals as far as I know. I once bought a VariXIII 3.5-10x40 Tactical that was at the time $410 wholesale and guess what no caps...

Highland Ranger - I have purchased over 20 Leuplod scopes over the years and none have come with lens covers. You paid a lot, but you got a lifetime of great value. Any problems at all and sent it back to Leupold (lifetime warranty) and they will take care of you. I have had 3 scopes completely rebuilt over the years and they come back as good as new. Great customer service as well.

Yes - that's why I got one, their legendary service.

I don't mind upgrading to the flip up covers - already ordered them.

But they should at least throw in some rubber covers . . .

...But then each scope sold would then cost $5-$10 more even for those who were going to buy flip up caps anyway.

Besides that cheap lens cover that comes on those Nikons only has the retaining string on one side which bites and is a cost cutting measure.

The only ones that are halfway decent that I have seen are the ones on Burris and Bushnell Elites.
