I saw a New? M1 Garand very nice wood, by Springfield, it was 2,200. Are these better than the WWII ones? 2,200 is pretty steeeep. M1A1 is only 1,200.....

That price is ludicrous. New cast receiver SA Inc. (NOT GI production) rifles are considered by many to be inferior to forged WWII- Korean War production rifles.

Buy an old M1. They can be had for as little as $600.

I don't think the new ones are better. The old ones were for sure "milspec". For that kind of money I would get a USGI collector grade rifle. I like the new springfield stuff though, don't get me wrong.

A rack grade CMP M1 and new parts will be cheaper and better. A friend of mine did that and it makes for an excellent rifle. He got a new barrel, replaced gas system parts, and got a new maple stock. Shoots 150-180gr 30-06 like a champ.

if you browse gunbroker, you can find service grades or better for 600-900 bucks.

Also, if you want a new looking Garand the gun to look at is the CMP special grade. It is a WWII Springfield receiver with new barrel and stock set. It is $995.

Tim, the CMP refurbs the rifles with new barrels and put them into their new stocks. You have to meet their requirements before buying but I have been to the South Store and seen these with my own two eyes. They are sweet!

Personally I like the rifles with "character" marks, not to mention the field and service grades are cheaper. Either way, you can't go wrong.

Springfield Inc. no longer makes the M1 Garand. I believe they stopped making them a year or two ago.

As others have suggested, the CMP Special is a much better deal.

I have 3 CMP rifles (a FG M1, a Special Grade M1, and a Mossy .22) actually, but I would not call a Special Grade "new".

So does anyone make new ones, that are not milsurp?

Who makes them? I didn't see any listed in the Springfield catalog.
You're right. Last year when I check, they still had them. They were USGI parts on cast receivers. They must have stopped making them because they couldn't compete with the milsurps. Kind of a no-brainer really. Would you pay $1200 for a reproduction? Or between $495-$900 and get the real deal?

I didn't know they were making them as recently as last year. You're right though, they can't compete with the milsurps, IMO.

Fulton Armory is another excellent choice if you want a "new" Garand, but I think they are built on mil surp receivers?

The last batch of commercial M1 rifles made by SA, Inc. had serial numbers in the 7 million range and cost $1k plus.

Here are a few possibilities to explain what you saw...

1) rifle was grossly overpriced by the seller, who is looking for a sucker
2) rifle was a USGI 'collector grade' rifle, or some kind of other rare pedigree
3) rifle was an accurized competition rifle

Any documentation that accompanies the rifle can go a long way to help justify the price.

Get a correct grade from the CMP for $1100. Or a "special" with new barrel, stock and parkerizing for $900.

or a service grade for $600.

IMO
