I have a RRA mid-length heavy barrel and I have been wanting to put some different handguards on it in order to mount a grip and a light/laser. After looking around I was almost ready to order some aluminum rails handguards although I REALLY didn't want to add anymore weight (than necessary)to the front of the gun or spend the ton of cash it was going to take. I've always liked the MOE handguards from Magpul but they used to only make them in Carbine length. Now they are making them in Mid and Full length and they are only listed at like 35 bucks! :D I hate to act like a fanboy, but I think I'm going to be giving them some money this year.

I'm definitely in for trying out some midlength MOE when they come out.

Rails don't have to be heavy though. I never *really* believed it, but I recently got the carbine length (7") DD Omega to put on an SBR build I'm working on, and those things are really very light (I'm talking, light as in barely heavier than a set of double heat shield M4 handguards), and drop right on with no modification. The hard mounted "Lite" rail from DD is supposed to be very light as well. Those will cost way more than any plastic handguards though.

I don't think they are out yet, but would be happy to be proven wrong.

I am interested because I expect they will be stiffer and stronger than the Cavarms units I currently have on my middy, and for $35, how can you go wrong?

If I end up liking the carbine Omega rail though, I might end up breaking down and getting the 9" model eventually also.

I haven't been super impressed with the Cav Arms fatty handgurads I've currently got on my middy. I'll wait until they Magpul handguards are out for a couple months and then probably get a set unless the early adopters report that they are total carp.

Long way away, but nice to see them probably coming.

FWIW, though, I have an MOE carbine handguard and some Cav Arms midlength handguards (both fat and tapered versions) and I actually like the Cav Arms handguards at least as well as the MOE. I do like the Cav Arms product better than other ordinary handguards I've tried - they seem to be a thicker and higher quality plastic, and fit much tighter.

OK, so why are these so great?

It's personal preference. They are a pretty good design, and let you mount rails to a cheap plastic handguard, but that's pretty much it. In my case I like it a lot better than skinny CAR handguards that came on a Shrubmaster, but I am ambivalent when compared to Cav Arms handguards in either tapered (rifle or mid length) or M4 style.

OK, so why are these so great?

Ability to mount a rail for VHG and/or flashlight without having to get a tube handguard.

Extended front section keeps skin off the of the hot FSB.

I have a RRA carbine with that barrel and I wouldn't want to add any more weight either. I have not seen the midlength Magpul MOE handguards for sell anywhere online yet. I don't think that they are out yet. I think Magpul stuff is pretty good and innovative.

They are listed in the catalog for this year. Thats where I saw them. You can download it here. http://www.magpul.com/catalogsignup.html

So I have to register to see the 2010 catalog. That's asinine, but whatever. I did register, and got an email confirming that I was registered. Then I try to download the catalog, and it just tells me to register again, or log-in, except that it simultaneously shows that I AM logged in. What a charlie-foxtrot. If this and the ACR are an indication of where Magpul is going in 2010, I don't need any part of it.

Is there some magic trick to see the catalog after you have registered and are logged-in?

I am thinking of getting one of these for my mid-lenght, I gonna assume these are non free float correct?

I really want to try some full size ones when they are out-- way cheaper than the DD Omega rail things-- and I already have them here for my STag when I pay it off....

These are snap in plastic handguards; they are an alternative to the standard M4 style. They are definitely not free floated, nor meant to replace a rail system, etc.

Any info if they are going to have rails for accessories and when they are going to be available for sale?

Do these come with little rail sections or are those sold separately?

All the pictures I see don't have rails on them.
