New Marlin Dark Series in cal 45-70.

I sort of like that.

The only minor problem is that aluminum handguard though lots of option for mounting accessories is going to be cold on the fingers during winter hunts. Need to find some good M-Lok compatible covers to fix that. The cheek riser appears removable, that will be nice for adapting to various sights/optics. I like the thread protector brake, I wonder if they make a not break thread protector? Very non-traditional but still fairly attractive. I think that would be a great rugger truck/brush gun.

I’m pretty much a traditionalist when it comes to lever guns but I do like a couple aspects of this one. The long rail allows for ringed scopes in the traditional position or red dots in the scout forward spot. The specs made mention that this is the first lever loop with a flat bottom for more comfortable cycling. Cycling comfort has never been an issue for me and I don’t have leather sleeves on any of my lever guns. Would like to see a close up of that re-design. Bet with a hot round coming out of that short barrel with brake it has quite the sound signature.

Also noted the 7 pound base weight. I really like that as it would be comfortable to ‘tote’ around on a woods jaunt or day hike with lots of incline.

I saw these yesterday on the Marlin site. I love traditional lever guns, but I also like these “Tacticool” ones as well.
I had decided my next long gun was going to be a Henry Big Boy X model in .45 Colt after handling one at my FGS (favorite gun store). Love the smooth action.
I got pretty excited about the Marlin 1894 Dark but I have no interest in a .44 Magnum. I hope they make their 1894s in other calibers soon. I would love to compare the Marlin Dark to the Henry X model.

Cross Bolt Salty… boo

they have conversations kits to make a Classic to TacticaCool
Proof read much?

Just bustin’ yer chops Mark. ;)
Since cross bolt safeties have been around for 40 years I doubt they’re going away. I put o-rings on mine so they don’t get set by accident and if I decide to put the safety on I just push a bit harder than normal. The safety is activated and the o-rings fall into my hand for reuse.

Now I am going to read this post to make sure I don’t make any mistakes you can bust my chops about. 😁

The specs made mention that this is the first lever loop with a flat bottom . . .
That's visible in the photos of the website and a pretty nifty idea. Not to mention the lever opening for the hand is smaller than the SBL loop (yay Marlin!).

I like that wide bottom lever design for a lot of lever cycling in one "outing". Makes me think that lever is more suited for a high volume lever gun, like my 39 . . . maybe even an 1894. Not sure I'd call anything in .45-70 a high volume lever gun, though.

Gun Community: Why doesn't the Gun Manufactures ever come out with something new and unique? I am bored with the same old designs.
Gun Manufacture: Releases something new and mildly unique...
Gun Community: What is this unproven ugly trash? Give me my (design older than dirt), thanks!

And we wonder why nothing is changing in the industry. "We" won't let it, even mild design changes get the hate in heaps let alone anything remotely paradigm shifting. We are never going to get our "Phased plasma rifle in the 40-watt range." with this completely unadventurous attitude.

I would love it if one of these companies making these modernized lever guns would make one in 9mm, 10mm or .45 ACP.
I know POF has their Tombstone model, but if I am going to pay 2 Grand for something it will have to look like it was designed by an engineering team, not a high school shop class.
Marlin has always made sleek looking lever guns. Henry’s look good as well. Rossi’s look nice but I am not interested in their lever guns.

Well......while not ugly exactly.....that little brass hump on the top of the grip kinda bugs me. If it feels good in hand tho id happily ignore that.

I think that Marlin levers a pretty decent rendition of a modernized lever rifle.
Id ditch the break, and probably make some gray laminate veneers to go on the grips (if those panels come off), cover the open part of the butt stock, and to go on the forend as rail covers.

Course, im not willing to spend more than maybe 7-800 on a lever gun, which takes me right out of the game.
.....tho admittedly on the right day, and with enough play money in my pocket....me buying something like that on a whim is very possible.

I’m all for new and innovative but putting a new dress on the same old pig is not new and innovative. However if others think a new dress is exactly what the pig needed then I wish them good luck and happy hunting. An ass for every seat as they say.

Those open areas of the butt stock look like a great spot for some sort of new fangled ammo carrier. Ought to be a fantastic way to clip in some spare cartridges (on both sides) without the carrier and cartridges adding width to the butt stock like a traditional cartridge carrier does.
