Novice Firearms Guy Thinks About Getting Back Into the Range

Hello,
I am new to The High Road.org, but this isn't my first visit to the site. I conducted some research online about firearms several years ago, and I figured I'd return for some new questions and concerns that I have.

My first experience with firearms, handguns in particular, came approximately seven years ago; I attended a NRA Basic Pistol course at a nearby gun club, "Gun For Hire." The instructors at G4H are phenomenal - I received top-flight, quality teaching and personal, one-on-one range guidance. I shared my success at the range (and course) with my father, a Vietnam-era Air Force Vet and proud NRA member, shortly before his passing in September 2010.

As it turns out, my father had no will, yet he left me in charge of all of his earthly possessions; I became a hearsay executor so-to-speak. I also came into possession of dad's CZ 9mm handgun. Having no firearms identification card of my own, the gun remains safely unloaded on the top-shelf of my closet, and it has not been fired since the week of father's passing, six years ago - his fellow-Vet buddies brought me to a range (in FL) after he died, and I went through a box of ammo.

It would be nice to get into a range again and feel the pounding in my chest with each gentle squeeze of the trigger of dad's 9mm, but I just don't know how to even begin the process. For all I know, the second I even mention I have a 9mm to my local police department, they might lock me up for whatever reason!

BartSr here as a redo member

We moved from Portland, OR to Arizona three years ago. Live 9 miles from a local shooting range (yay). Have been getting more and more interested in flintlock stuff as I usually make underhammers. My latest is a .22 cal flintlock using a 10-22 barrel and home made lock. It shoots and is somewhat accurate depending in what type of projectile chosen. It would be nice to have a barrel with muzzle loader twist, ie slower.

Nam 68-69 - USMC 68-71

I hunt both bow and rifle - avid AR-shooter - 7 children - 4 boys and one son-in law also avid shooters, hunters, etc. 44 Grandkids all coming up and being introduced - as they reach age - hunting, shooting. (Yep all grandkids are "organic" no divorces or remarried)

My husband and I raised 5 boys

So ya, my hubby and I raised 5 boys, 2 are in the military, one in the Corp the other ARNG. Both have been deployed to Afghanistan and Iraq and have seen some serious action. And one of our sons also works as a criminal analyst for various federal agencies, he also belongs to an international multi jurisdictional task force.

As for myself, I've been an avid reloader for better than 30 years, shot shell, bottle neck rifle and handgun. I absolutely love anything firearm related. If it's center fire, I reload for it. I'm pretty intense with my reloading and demand precision in every aspect of the hobby.

Handgun I currently reload for includes 9mm, 38 spcl/357, .40 cal., 44 mag., but there are a few others I work with for friends and family.

As for bottle neck stuff this includes .223, 22-250, .243 win., 6mm Rem/244, .270 win., 280 Rem., 7mm RM, 30-06, .308, 300 WM and a couple of other now and then cartridges for friends and family.

I don't do a much shot shell any more, shot has become so horribly expensive, so I limit myself to loading magnum stuff for turkey, dove & quail and some pheasant loads.

I'm getting older, an unavoidable part of life, but I still engage in hunting with my hubby, boys and close friends. Last 5 years or so we've done a loot of introducing people to the sport. There's something so special about picking up a nice big buck a couple miles away in the spotting scope, then enjoying that glow of amazement on their face as they observe it in their natural undisturbed environment.

I guess I'm a bit different than the average woman, and in this family the woman are just as involved in the firearm related sports as the men, we've also earned the respect of our male counter parts. We're not bra burner's or anything like that, and we do like our pink guns and pink hunting attire.

My apologies for the long winded introduction guys. This whole blogging thing is very new to me.

Cheers

Hey everyone. I've searched THR for years for great info, but just recently joined. Military guy from MO, been in 17 years. Had lots of pistol and rifle training over the years both in the military and civilian side, but don't consider myself an expert per se. Just started reloading. Worked up my second batch of 9mm for range tests this morning. I'm sure I'll continue to learn from the site. I just hope to provide some feedback that others find valuable, as many of you have done for me.

Hi, been a fan of 250 savage many, many years. Consider it one of the great cartridge designs of all time. Have owned Savage 99, Savage super sporter and Rem 700. The old super sporter still shoots WAY under moa with handloads. It is heavy and clumsy but is still my favorite rifle. Recently have been told it is a very weak action. It handles everything I reload without problems, and I noticed Savage chambered them Super Sporters in '06 too. Just wondering if anyone had thoughts about the SS action.

Hi all. New member here. I have been lurking for a couple of months reading through the reloading forums. I recently began reloading for semi-auto pistols. I have found alot of useful tips and information in that forum.

30 years old. Phoenix, AZ. Just getting my reloading stuff together. I have several platforms. Looking forward to playing with loads on 38/357. I'll just keep standard loads on 9, 45. I'll get into rifle after I get pistol down. Great forum, thanks for the access

Florida shooter - handguns and rifles. I heard that this is the place with civilized forum discussions on firearms, so here I am!

Also a new member. I've been lurking on this site for a while, so I figured I should join. My wife and I are a Ruger family from CT.

Former member here; got rid of my antiquated dial-up computer system and got a whole new unit complete with high speed internet access in May 2015. Then this site wouldn't let me on so I became an occasional lurker. Now that THR has been revamped I was able to re-register so now I have officially returned. Have also retired as of this past April 27th so now I can also be on here more than in the past. It's good to be back!

Just found this place- it was pointed out to me as a place where civilized discussions about firearms were the rule and thought I'd give it a try. My wife and I live in Seattle Washington. Grew up in the suburbs in the 1960's and 70's, did some time the army and worked at a variety of jobs including Law Enforcement- so many different jobs that friends hung the nickname 'Tinker' on me. Settled into my current work in 92 or so. Always loved firearms; did a lot of hunting as a kid and a bit after the army. These days I like mostly older or unusual guns, particularly revolvers and antique doubles and I've been trying to get into hunting again. Self-employment doesn't make that easy. In the last couple of years I've turned my hand to a bit of amateur gunsmithing and have made few from scratch in my workshop. Linda's health has been bad recently so being a single-income household has meant I can't afford to shoot as often as I used to. Very much want to set up to reload handgun and rifle ammunition this year if finances allow, especially since a lot of the old guns fire expensive or hard-to-find cartridges.

Hello all!

I'm a writer and editor by trade, and I've found a niche covering firearms, tactical, prepping, and similar subjects. Toward that end I'm joining the forum here formally as I hope to both contribute and tap into the hive mind's collective knowledge.

I've been shooting for years. I'm also interested in gardening/sustainability, reading, writing, chess, craft beer, green tea, open source operating systems, and a few other things. If any of that appeals, get in touch!

Cheers,

Michael

Hi!
This thread is a place for new THR members to introduce themselves.

Tell us a little about who you are and what kind of gun stuff you're interested in!

Not a new member, but returning after several years away from the shooting scene. I just picked up a gun I've always wanted (CZ-75DB) and can't wait to get to the range. I do some .22 pistol and rifle plinking as well. Going to have to satisfy the shooting urge scanning these forums and picking up useful tidbits from all the knowledgable folks here as the weather is inclement at the moment (fall in Vermont). Cheers!
