Hello all
Happy to find this place. Thanks to the mods and members for an interesting and informative forum. I'm a humble and respectful guest, and clean up after myself.
I'm about to be a new handgun owner. Well, "about" as in waiting indefinitely for a Springer XD 9mm (black, night sights, 5"). So I'm hoping it won't be too much longer, though my dealer says there is zero visibility from the distributor or manufacturer at this point (I'm thinking Croatia must have some job openings). My purchase wasn't part of the Bambi-panic, which I fully understand - just a case of bad timing.
I'm in southern California - the spot where my oldest brother taught me to shoot when I was 11 back in the last 60s (Ruger Single Six .22 - he still has it) is now, of course, a completely developed area. Before an overseas assignment as a civilian in a very very bad place that's dusty and hot I took some quasi-tactical handgun instruction back at Blue Ridge Arsenal in Chantilly, VA. I liked the Glocks we used, but after some test-firing at my local range here, which has a nice selection of rentals, I settled on the XD.
Current daydreaming focuses on putting lots of rounds through the new gun when I get it, maybe doing some tactical-style training with it, then perhaps getting a light/laser, then a 1911 ......
Interest is mostly hobby and self-defense, but competitive shooting might be an option down the line.
My screen name is just homage to the beautiful guns on the Iowa-class battleships, which I have seen up close (before the ships' final retirements) many times but have never seen/heard fired. Perhaps the ultimate expression of the art and science of the rifled gun. In any case, the main batteries along with the teak decks, brass fittings, and foot-thick armor just give me a warm and fuzzy feeling.
