Hey everybody, just received this older rifle from an uncle of mine, Mosin-Nagant 7.62X54mm. Just interested on what kind of scope would be best for something like this? I know its an older gun, so I'm not quite sure what kind of modern scopes (if any) are able to mount on this. Thanks!

know these aren't very clear pictures, phone camera is pretty shabby :banghead:

There are about a billion threads on Mosin Nagants on the forums.

Ultimately, if you want to scope it, ask yourself one question. Do I want to keep it in it's historical military configuration, or do I want to update, modernized and sporterize this rifle?

If the former is your answer, there are reproduction PU scopes and mounts. They're going to cost you more than what the rifle is worth by a long shot. Most Mosin Nagant M91/30 rifles sell between $85-$125. Last 'sniper' model I saw was priced for $600, and that was a reproduction. However, adding the 'official' PU scope and mount will require you to have the bolt handle turned down to clear the scope. I'm pretty sure this eliminates the use of stripper clips for reloading the magazine.

Now, if the latter is your answer, you have options. There are various scope mounts, some of which require permanent alterations to the rifle, others are not.

A scout mount is the least invasive option. It will replace the rear sight leaf (a non-permanent change), but requires an extended eye relief scope. My Mosin M-44 has a scout mount and 15.5" relief scope. You do not have to make any other alterations to the rifle. This is also the least expensive option.

You (or the gunsmith of your choice) can drill and tap the receiver for more modern rail mounts. This is a permanent alteration, will require the bolt handle turned down, and eliminates the use of stripper clips for reloading the magazine.

A repro sniper for $600 is quite a bit of a rip-off. You can buy them for $350 from SOG all day long and twice on sunday.

IMHO putting a scope on the rifle is just not worth it. You are going to have to drill it, tap, and bend the bolt if you want a repro scope....that is going to cost you more then the rifle cost. If you want to go with a modern scope it is still going to require power tools, and unless your name is bubba I doubt you are going to want to do that.

If it was me I would enjoy it for what it is, the run of the mill (there are pages as to what that means) 91/30 is not usually worth more then $100 on the used/second hand/ pre owned/ whatever you want to call it, market.

If you want one that is scoped with a vintage looking scope just buy one, they are not that expensive.

Yes, that^^^

What year and arsenal is that Mosin? The reason I ask is that some Mosins are more desirable to collectors (and therefore worth more money) than others. Once you permanently modify it by installing a scope, its value falls to practically nothing. If you absolutely must butcher a Mosin, at least pick one with the least collector value, like a '42-'43 Izhevsk refurb.

an anverage import marked rearsenaled 91/30 is about $80

A fin
a US made
a M91
a Cossack
a Dragoon (un-updated)

go for more, lots more as in 200+ for a Finnish 91/30 to thousands for the rarer sniper variants.

So true...that is why I say find out what you have before you butcher it.

You could be sitting on a gold mine that the second you put a drill to it will not be worth $20.

The PU mount and scope on my M44 would be nice but I just don't have the funds so I went with the least expensive route using the S & K ring mount.

Basically it just replaces the rear sight leaf which can be put back into it original configuration with no damage to the rifle if I so desire. My old eyes just aren't what they used to be.

Amen Brother!

I went with the S&K Weaver mount and Busnell Trophy XLT 2-6x32 handgun scope on my 1932 hex 91/30. It makes shooting past 100 yards SOOOO much nicer.
