Hello All, Im new here. I just bought my first weapon, a Mossberg 500A-26A.
I have been around weapons all my life but have never owned my own. I decided after much thought I would start looking for a shot gun, I enjoy shooting and the home security aspect. I found this sweet Mossberg at a pawn shop for 175. Does anyone have information on this shot gun ? Should I register it? Are locks for shotguns avalible? I would very much appreciate any advice/information at all, Thanks, Iguffaw

#1. Welcome to THR, this is a great place.. you will find out.

#2. Great choice on buying a shotgun first, they are the most versatile weapons and also the most fun (atleast i think so :p )

#3. Where do you live that you would have to register it? If you don't have to I wouldn't bother with the paperwork.

#4. Why do you want a lock for it?

#5. Mossberg 590s are rugged shotguns, you could've done worse

i wouldalso like to welcome you to thr and i have to say great job on that mossberg most love the remington but my mossberg has out shot a 870 a copule of tiems with differnt people behind them but it all boils down to the gun and i love mossbergs great buy

I would not register the gun if you do not have to in your area
Mossberg is a good gun for the money, you did good
You can get gun locks at your dealer or gun show , last one I went to gave away free locks if you wanted one

Thanks for the replies!

I live in rural Iowa. I need the lock because my boyfriend has 10 and 13 year old boys. I have shot it and it is a thing of beauty!!!! Now I can't stop thinking about a 9mil Glock, Hmmmmmmm

Good choice! The lock is probably a good idea, but I would maybe thing about leaving it unlocked and loaded while you are sleeping, keep it in the bedroom next to the bed, ya know? That's your call.

The best thing would be to get the kids into it, make it so they AREN'T curious about it. When it's taboo, they want to mess with things. If they get to shoot it at the range when they want, it will become a "Whoopty do, it's a shotgun, I shoot it all the time." At their ages, they are definitely old enough to be well supervised at the range while shooting. Maybe they won't get into it. Either way, they will know how to shoot it. God forbid something happens, they might be able to have your back sometime.

Welcome !!

Any sporting goods store that sells firearms should have a trigger gaurd lock that will fit. Or go to Brownell's , Cabela's, Gander Mountain, on the web and order one through them . Often times a small padlock that will fit behind the trigger can be had at the local hardware store.

Mossberg 500 is just fine , and further info can be had by visiting Mossbergs web site. If there is specific information or questions you have regarding the gun, don't hesitate to ask here either . Enjoy shooting ! :D

PS : No need to registor anything behond the paperwork you did at the pawn shop.

I live in Iowa, you don't need to register any firearms here.

You can pick up a three pack of trigger locks at Walmart for about $10 if I recall right.

Also check out www.iowacary.org

Its a site for making Iowa a Shall Issue State.

p.s. I live in Boone, IA

Welcome! I also recently purchased a Mossy 500. It came with a cable lock which will never see any use in my house, so if you would like to have it, I will gladly send it to you free of charge. PM mailing info if interested.

I also agree with the idea of getting the boys involved. Great family activity. My daughter (14) always goes with me to the range. She has her own Marlin .22 and has gotten quite good with it. Likes shooting dad's pistols too.
