New partial AR-15 build ... not sure where it's heading

Yes, 24" barrel.

I don't have a chrony so I didn't get to measure the velocity of the ammo. I used the info off the website for loading.

I used Lever Revolution and loaded to their specs, which they list at about 3000 FPS.

They list the power of the round on par with a 7mm-08 and this is out of an AR.

Was that with 100/110 grainers and what was the heaviest you could fit at col length.

I was using 139-150gr bullets, pretty sure that 165 is about max. I know they window out part of the mag for longer/heavier rounds.

Hornady dies came in, brass is still on backorder, a couple of cases of Hornady ammo are on back order, I don't have a 6.5 Grendel bolt or carrier or a number of other small pieces yet but I'm working on it. I got sidetracked with a CZ Bren 2S.

That sucks it’s all on back order

All of your options mentioned sound like good choices, I think it really comes down to what fits in your needs and use.

I have a 20” Bison 6.8 SPC that is a intermediate gas with a superlative arms and Coda handguard, it is a sweet rifle. It wears an A2 stock which I like as well. I enjoy it, quite a bit of performance out of an AR15, 110 Nosler AB at 2,750-2,800 depending on barrel with a 20”.
I went with the 18" Bison midlength with the MI suppressor ready tube, and yes it is also sweet. Mine really likes Hornady 110 Black ammo which seems pretty hot. I dont reload for this one but if I did it would be using 120's with a stiff load to drive them as fast as possible.

That's a good side track lol, wish we could have them.

Wilson had bcg a while back.

So many gun projects, so little time ;)

I wasn't planning on buying one but a friend bought a NIB model on GB and it shipped to me. This is the same individual who sold me the Falkor upper/lower that started this thread. Only 50 Bren 2s pistols with an 11" barrel were shipped into the US and being a collector he was upset that there was a hole in the box. I could care less and he could see that I really liked the Bren. He took a gamble, found and bought another NIB Bren in the same configuration but with a perfect box and then asked me if I wanted to buy the first one. How could I refuse? It's a superb fighting carbine and arguably superior to an AR. I added the folding stock so it's now an SBR. I bought an Aimpoint CompM5s for it along with a light, sling, and VFG. Now back to the Falkor.

I apologize for delay in this project but I have an update. After getting sidetracked with another CZ Bren 2s (11" barrel this time, other one is an 8"), a couple of tractors, numerous implements, and my job, everything I needed finally came back in stock and is inbound. Ammunition seems to be readily available up here and I was able to buy 100 rounds of Hornady Black 105gr BTHP for a little under $30/box. I have some brass on back order but will use the factory ammo to get an idea of what this thing will do.

I ended up ordering the following parts to finish off the build.

Rainier Arms - 15" M-LOK switch rail 15"
Superlative Arms - adjustable clamp on gas block
Rainier Arms - Rifle + 1 gas tube (because I'm an idiot and forgot that Proof had already provided one)
Faxon - 6.5 Grendel 9310 bolt carrier group, nitrided
JP Rifles - Gen 2 silent captured spring/buffer JPSCS2-15H2
Radian - Talon ambidextrous safety selector 2-lever kit
Radian - Forward assist
Alexander Arms - E-Lander magazines 6.5 Grendel 2@10rnd, 4@17rnd, 4@24rnd
MAGPUL - MS1 QDM sling, black

I wanna see what this sucker can do! Please post pics when she is finished!!!!!

I lost another week due to a back injury but did manage to get the rifle put together today with one caveat. The Superlative Arms clamp on adjustable gas block is too close to the inside of the Fortis/Rainier forend (at 6 o'clock) so I ordered a solid version with the same matt stainless finish that will be here in a few days. Other than that this build turned out very nice.

The JP enterprises silent captured spring is very slick, as is the stock, the QR forend, the Radian safety etc. I haven't figured out what I want to do in terms of optic or mount but will use something already in inventory until I get a better idea of what I want on here. The AREA419 brake is on there for effect more than anything. Most shooting will be supressed but I do want to see if the brake adversely affects accuracy.

I really like that the Falkor upper/lower receivers use threaded pins rather than roll pins for the forward assist, the rear take down pin etc. The Geiselle trigger is excellent as expected. The only QC issue was the POF roller cam pin upgrade. I've bought more than a few of those over the years and this one should never have left the premises. I cleaned it up but it's not their usual quality.

Thanks. The rifle feels lighter than it is and I also like the sleek lines. I bought a couple of pounds of Accurate 2520 powder last week so will add that powder to my intended load development process. Seems like a good powder for the heavier bullets that I have on hand. I also have brass (after firing), primers and powder so will start tinkering as soon as I'm able.

6mm-arc-gas-58-105gr-data.pdf (hornady.com)

I had discussed magazine selection early on in this thread and the E-Lander Israeli manufactured 6.5 Grendel magazines are excellent for the 6mm ARC.

The friend that sold me the matched upper & lower came by today to pick up a Galil pistol that shipped to me and he mentioned regretting selling the Falkor receiver set after seeing the end result. :p

I settled on a scope for this build over the weekend and ordered a Vortex Viper PST Gen II FFP 3-15x44mm with the EBR-7C MRAD reticle. I have three of the Gen 1 PSTs and have been happy with them and have wanted to try the Gen IIs. I'd thought about the 5-25x50mm Viper PST Gen II FFP with the same reticle but the 3-15x is about 1-1/2" shorter and 3oz lighter. The 109gr bullets typically need less than 10 MRAD out to 1,000 yards so the LaRue Tactical 30mm mount shown above with zero cant in combination with the Viper should be a good match. I actually ordered a 5-25x as well but it'll most likely end up on the Tikka T3 in .300 Win Mag or the SAKO S20 in 6.5 PRC. The Tikka currently has a NF 3-15x F1 mounted which is a great scope but just feels big and bulky on that rifle.

All that said, if I discover that a canted mount is better, or the 5-25x would provide an advantage I can always order another mount and move things around.

The solid Superlative Arms adjustable gas block arrived at the Post Office this morning so I should be able to pick it up today and swap out the clamp on version. Proof dimples the barrel for the gas block so that makes it easy.

Yes indeed a range report would be super' when you feel better of course.

Best wishes for a speedy recovery.
J

Thanks. I'm more than ok that the scope is a week or so out or else I'd most likely be hindering the healing process by shooting when I shouldn't be. I have other scopes but waiting for the new one is a good thing. I need to get back into a daily routine of stretching and core strengthening as well as staying hydrated to avoid being in this situation again.

Shooting can be brutal on the back, even prone can hurt if you're laying down for extended periods. I know two female Olympic shooters that both have chronic back problems due to shooting.
