New Pietta 1858, is it a problem?

Glad you finally got a good one. I have had some issues with theirs in the past but sounds like they got in a bad batch for sure.

So if Cabela's sells you a muzzleloader and it's defective out of box that's okay to them? No, that's bull, especially if this is a return to exchange it for another.

I had an issue with a 51 Navy I got a few years ago, the loading lever wasn't locked in place well and I knew during shooting it would unlatch and fall so I drove to my nearest Cabela's and did a return and replace, but before I walked out with the other one, I had customer service take it out of the box for me so I could inspect it and it was fine.

This was before Bass Pro bought them, so IDK, the policy may have changed, but even still, as long as you haven't fired it, you should be able to return it and I think that's the issue with them is they can't tell if they've been fired.

If you're not happy and you haven't shot it, return it and tell them you don't want a refund, you want to exchange a defective item for another one and you want to inspect the new one before you sign anything and leave the store with it. They may not have another one in stock, so you may have to wait and if they do have them in stock and those also have issues, you may be out of luck.

The good news is it's just a barrel and those are cheap enough to replace, just not as easy to replace as a Colt style.

Glad you got it sorted. Try to inspect before leaving the store and I can not believe the people on here who advised you to accept junk, because thats the way it is.

I’ve had a Cabelas 1858 Rem and a 1860 Colt, bothe Piettas. NIB, never fired. Now I’m afraid to go out and check them!

I also think that it depends on the batch and when made.
Some years ago I went to the local Cabela's store and checked 4-5 of them just to find one with a smooth trigger.
That happened more than once.
I also walked out if they didn't have one that was satisfactory.
Not that a trigger pull can't be easily fixed by many folks, sometimes it may only need to be broken in or honed.
But a decent trigger with a clean, crisp release was what I was mostly concerned about.
Then the store started putting cheap trigger locks on them inside the boxes, which the sales clerk removed when requested.

I've never heard any complaints about the bore - barrel being lop-sided before.
This seems to be something new like Pietta is scraping the bottom of the production barrel.
How difficult could it be for Pietta to scrap some barrels and replace them at the factory.

This one is the keeper, everything works as it should. One thing what keeps it from being perfect is the front sight, which has a minor flaw but easily fixable. I am happy with it!
Hope it shoots the way it looks :)

I'm glad that you stuck to your guns and that your local Cabela's treated you right.
Imagine all of the folks who don't ever get the opportunity to inspect their new gun in person before buying.

The Pietta factory workers must know which guns to place in the Cabela's boxes.
Perhaps Cabela's receives a special discount for buying so many defective guns.
It's difficult to imagine otherwise.

That's exactly why Taylor's & Company, Dixie Gun Works and other reputable gun dealers have a higher price tag on the same firearms. They filter all the junk out at the factory and chose only the Highest Grade. Well, as I said before I'm all done with Cabela's, and willing to pay extra dollar just to avoid all the aggravations..
