But those are SO Ugly! One can get a wood stock that isn't too expensive

Look around in gun shops for used Wingmasters. Lots out there. I bought one 2 years ago for 250. Had some wear, but shoots very well. Smooth action also.

Update. Son #1's Wingmaster cracked just like my TB. Late 70s gun. I gave him my late brother's TC two years ago. It cracked last week. Same age as my TB, '75. Total round counts, approx, of course, TB, 300,000. Wingmaster, 40K, TC, maybe 15K. All from same era.

My favorite 870 is a 1985 "Competition" Trap gun, although parts for the gas system are getting really scarce.

The complete guns themselves usually run about $850, when you can find one. The 870 Competition offers a slight advantage over the 1100 in that you don't have to worry about it kicking the hull out onto the next shooter, and it is easier to maintain. (Except for the aforementioned scarcity of parts.) The recoil reduction isn't quite as good, but they shoot softer than a regular 870.

Where did the receiver crack? I have a 75 TB and a 95 WM both in 12 gauge.

Age isn't the main factor, it's number of rounds fired, and type of rounds fired. If you shoot all handicap rounds through one, it will crack faster than 1 oz. loads.

Welcome to The High Road, stubshaft!

All of my 12 gauge reloads are 7/8 ounce, right now I'm using Clay Dot powder
about 17.5 grains.

Another site, Reddit, never ceases to talk trash about Remingtons to an extent that if all of the trash talkers owned one, Remington would have had to sell at least another 50,000 for each to have one. If you get away from there, you find the negativity about vanished.

My brother has an Express model from 2017. Zero problems. A friend has a magnum Express. He had to lap the chamber with steel wool. I have an 1100 from 2013 that is as nice as a person could wish for. Can’t speak for the gun at your Walmart, but my experience is good.
