new rem 700 extractor problem

I have a friend with a brand new rem 700 in .338 ultra mag and the extractor is sheared off after only 20 rds. Its is a piece of metal shaped like a typical extractor, attached to a semi circle band spring that fit inside of the rim of the bolt head. I have one in .308 and the extractor only shows some shiny wear on the edges and I have 500 rds thru it. Any one have any ideas as to what happened and how to fix it?

If it's brand new, tell him to send it back to remingtion. Probably just a defective part. If remingtion won't fix it, it'll have to be replaced, it's not hard to do either. One pin holds the extractor on. Drive out the pin(the extractor is under spring tension so be careful not to let the spring fly), replace the extractor with a new one, drive a new pin in, and your done. shouldn't take more than about 5 minutes.
