New Rifle Time, But Now What?

It looks like you just want a new rifle.:p Who doesn't? The rifles you have are all but capable for your hunting needs. I personaly like to keep one hunting rilfe that I can learn and know how to shoot well. Mine is a Ruger Hawkeye in 25-06.

I just want to replace the rifle I sold. Technically I don't consider that I've got a "new" gun unless I increase my overall collection number. :) Anything else is just a replacement. Helps me justify so I'm not sounding like I got a "new" gun all the time.

For the 7-08 shoot the 120gr Nosler Ballistic Tips. It will be plenty for deer and it kicks like a kitten. My Weatherby Vanguard S2 shoots the 120gr NBT at 2900fps and its accurate, deadly, and kicks very little. Plus the 120gr NBT are tougher than the 140gr NBT because they have a thicker jacket.
That gun is a contender right now. I was also considering the BAR Shorttrac 7mm-08 until I saw the price. Might be a little hard for me to use a $1k gun as a woods gun.

I also found a Weatherby Vanguard Deluxe in 257 Roberts. Just wonder if the deluxe is too nice for the woods.

Or you could buy my CZ 550 270 Win NIB along with new dies and components at a bargain pricel

If you reload gunbroker has a nice model 70 coyote in 25wssm. Has laminate stock, 3 boxes of brass and dies.

.
Whatever you do, don't get a Steyr Mannlicher Scout.

You might not use many of your other rifles again.

Olympus;

The CZ 550 in 6.5 Swedish Mauser is available in a conventional stock. You don't have to go with the fullstock, that's an option not the norm. But CZ is replacing the Mauser-actioned 550 series with the push-feed 557 series, so don't wait too long.

I'm not trying to pick a fight, just curious, why didn't you sell off the .270 & keep the Swede? I've got a Swede myself & have had a Bob. The .257 Roberts is a fine round, but has nowhere near the killing ability that the Swede does. Yeah, there's only .007" difference in the bore diameters, but the Swede has it all over the Bob when it comes to bullet weights, sectional density, and B/C. Or, to put it another way, I hunt elk with my Swede & don't feel undergunned in the least.

Honestly, I'd much prefer trading or selling the .270 A-Bolt. But it was a gift from my dad and I feel bad selling it. And he's the kind of guy that refuses to sell a single gun, no matter of he likes it or not. I'm sure he'd never know if I sold it, but I would know and I'd feel bad.

Olympus;

Good enough reason, I understand. Just re-barrel it (Lilja?) and it seems you'd get two birds killed with one stone.

I don't have a gunsmith that I trust anymore after my last debacle with a forum member gunsmith here. I'm a little gun-shy.

Olympus;

I could suggest several very good smith's here in Montana, but I'd also understand not wanting to ship the gun halfway across the country either. There should be somebody in PA who's got references & may even be close enough to visit the shop. If you'd care to, I can touch base with a couple of guys I know back there. One's in Pittsburgh & the other's somewhere in the vicinity of Blue Knob. Both of 'em are solid people & won't put up with a smith who can't do first-class work. And both of 'em get work done on a fairly often basis, they're both major gun guys who can afford to satisfy themselves whatever the firearm quirk.

I think I'll probably just leave it like it is and keep looking. The Weatherby Vanguard 7mm-08 and 257 Bob are contenders, I just can't find any ammo for the 257.

Based on your criteria: a BLR in 7-08.
Although, 2 years ago when I bought a Sako Swede, I almost went with a .257 Bob. I love having a 'full power' rifle that 'anyone' can shoot and it is hands down my most accurate.
Of course I recommend the BLR b/c I want one and the caliber matches your criteria. The 6.8 idea was also good.

Browning BLR in caliber of your choice. They even have take down models. I've handled one called their hog hunter. Was a 308 take down with like an 18" barrel was very nice rifle.
