Greetings,

I am having RND make me a rifle in 338 Lapua with a 26" or 28"
extreme match grade barrel. Which twist rate should I ask for; 1/9 or 1/10?
I will be using it for long range hunting, 500yd to 1000yd.

Determining what bullet weights to shoot should be the criteria for selecting the twist.
If you use the 300gr match bullets, then a 1in9 should be used, if you want to use just 250gr bullets, then a 1in10 should be adequate.
The 250gr bullets should also work well in the 1in9.

Sierra does testing lots of testing with twist rates on their match bullets for optimum accuracy over the years. I would suggest you contact them. My feeling is the 1 in 10 will be more than enough.

My 338 Win Mag has a 1 in 12 twist but I only use 250 grain bullets in it.

Just looked at my Sierra bullet chart. It looks like from that Sierra recommends a 1 in 10 twist with the 300 grain MK.

Lapua recommends a 1in10 twist or faster for their 300gr match bullet. Berger will be introducing an even longer 300gr VLD soon, I understand.
Bullets continue to evolve so plan ahead.
