I have an old 740 that I want to replace the rear iron sight that was removed at some point in its life. My problem is that everything I can find shows that these rifles had a screw on rear sight but mine is dovetailed. Im assuming that is because mine was either a very early rifle or the barrel was replaced at somepoint. Is there anybody that makes a dovetailed rear sight that would not look out of place on this rifle. Also the sight would need to be tall enough to be seen over the top of a weaver scope rail. Im gonna get some see through scope mounts so I can also have a scope on it. Sorry for being so long winded.

Thanks!

We both have basically the same gun (Husqy Model#640 in 8x57, circa the very late 40's----early 50's)), except that his barrel was dove-tailed while mine was d'd & t'd. But because there were a few slight variations of these imported Husqys, my best guess is that his rear sight is probably original----or at least original 'in style'.....

After a little researching, the original 740's were not D&T for scope mounts, although doing so would not be a problem. The later guns being tapped for the Weaver #62 scope base.
Numrich Arms gun parts show a number for an early style rear sight for the M740 but it's no longer available.
The M760 pump used many of the basic same parts, and it's mentioned in an article that early versions used a 3/8" dovetailed rear sight.
Here's a link to Brownell's list of dovetailed sights that may work for you.

I have looked at brownells but I still have no idea. I hate to just throw money at a sight that I wont even be able to use. Has anyone else done anything like this to this model of rifle or somthing like it? And if you have what did you use?

Maybe call the guys at Remington country store. They helped me out with sights for a slug gun.
