Ok, I just got my Springfield XD-9, a 4" service model and had a trade deal lined up with a friend of mine for his Insight M3 tac light. I slapped that light on last night and it is nice an bright, BUT it looks like this setup is not quite designed for the 4" version of the XD. It is a bit longer than the factory rail, there's no real weight issue just more of a concern if this is what it should look like:

Now, if I'm using this light it would be only in my home, I don't plan to use this at the range (if I buy a light/laser combo that's another story) so it would not be attached while doing any extended shooting. I figure if I'm going to get powder on the lens it'll be the least of my concerns if I'm using the XD.

Although that brings up a point of functionality... sheesh now I need to go test this setup at the range to make sure muzzle blast won't damage the light or impair function...

...or should I just mount this on my AR15 and get a smaller setup for the XD?

Dont fret, I had a G23 with a light on it that stuck out way further and it got a little dirty but did not hurt it, a nice wipe down with clean it up quickly.

The M3 looks funny because it hangs a little off, this is why I bought the glock light, its does not have the rail hang over the M3 does. I have a suspiction that the surefire lights would fit and look better on an XD

and if its not snapping on your rail just push it down onto a carpeted surface or change the back portion of the light.
I had a Sig Revolution with a light rail that was slightly off and had a hard time excepting and locking lights.

and get some night sights if u plan on using a light/gun combo, you'll love them

This is normal. Even a Glock light on a glock can stick out past this muzzle. The only real concern is cleaning it after shooting. Our tactical team uses lights extensively and the only problem they have is with the lense becoming dirty after heavy shooting. It just needs a wipe down.
