I got a new pistol, an SA XD 9mm sub-compact. I tried it at the range, loved how it felt, decided to get one. It'll be my concealed carry pistol. So that leaves me with a few questions.

What do you guys use to clean and lube up your xd's? Any products I should steer clear from? How about ammo, any ammo to avoid or anything like that? Have any recommendations on self-defense ammo for the 3'' barrel? Any accessories or anything to spend some money on? Any holster recommendations (I'm a smaller guy, 5'8'' 165 pounds, and oftentimes I'm wearing a shirt and tie)? How about a good gun belt that won't kill my wallet?

One last question, is this a gun that likes to run a little more wet or dry when it comes to lubing it up?

Sorry for all the questions, just super excited and can't wait to get it going and everything. Thanks tons for any and all help and comments.

P.s. No pics...I spent the money I was going to use on a new digital camera on the XD instead. I think I made the right choice!

I have the same gun and use regular cleaning fluid on it. I use Remington Dri-Lube on all my guns, so they are run dry. Using it, I don't have lint buildup or, if I do take it out shooting at the range, dust and powder particulates sticking in the oil. As far as a holster, I use a cheapo Uncle Mikes IWB and it does a good job for me. I've looked for other holsters for this pistol but never really found any. I will say, if I find one eventually, I will replace the holster with it, as long as it is IWB.

As far as shirt and tie, I am a 3 piece suit man at work, and have concealed the XD IWB under the vest, and it disappears as long as the vest isn't tightened up too much and is a darker color.

Might consider a Pearce Grip Extender if you have/hate danglin' pinkies.
Holsters are finally becoming available for the XDSCs-can be a bit pricey if you add the lining, and may require 'bout a 3 month wait, but I splurged and bought a black High Noon Sky High. For something with less/no wait and that "custom" feel, I've liked DeSantis stuff, particularly the Thumb Break Mini Slide. Iff'n I didn't want a thumb break, think I might like High Noon's Slide Guard better than the DeSantis Mini Slide?

FWIW, if you're into double magazine pouches, I use DeSantis Double Mag Pouch with Galco and High Noon holsters. I like the DeSantis Double Mag Pouch better-it's more "shrink wrapped" around the mag, seems to be smaller, and they make it with 2 pieces of leather which makes both mag pockets the same size (consistent tension). The High Noon and Galco double mag pouches I had were made with one piece of leather that overlapped-the mag pockets were visibly different sized and you don't have/can't adjust for the same tension on both magazines!

DeSantis stuff is now sold @ Optics Planet-good prices, free shipping over $29.95, and Google "Optics Planet Discount Code" for 5% off codes.

BTW-I also just upgraded from an Insight X2 light to a Streamlight TLR-3-MUCH brighter whiter light (LED), runs longer, but I do like the Insight mounting system better.

'Course, the Streamlight Night Fighter with the new C4 LED makes a good light choice-bright, white LED and the doughnut allows 2-handed hold/operation with a pistol.

A couple more options:
LaserMax for XD
Night Sights & installation-sounds like 'bout 50% of OEM XD sights can be a real bear to remove. I sent mine to the link included (already purchased Trijicons from Optics Planet) and shipped the slide USPS Priority Mail-total cost for installation, confirmation, insurance, and shipping was under $29!
UpLULA-all my other speed loaders now reside in my holster box! :banghead:

AFA ammo-I split the difference in the weight argument and go with 124 gr-you might want to go with +P for SD?

I've been really happy with my Comp-Tac Spartan holster. It has a wide range of adjustment, interchangeable styles and colors of belt clips, the leather back is very comfortable.

The XD's aren't picky about lube or cleaning products. I used CLP, or Hoppe's, or carburetor cleaner for cleaning, depending on what I had on hand.

I always use just a dab of SuperLube grease for lubing the frame rails on carry guns, because oils tend to run down the gun and end up on my pants.

Yep. Really helps. Clean and lube like any other auto.

A conversion barrel is another neat add on.

congrats, i have 2 xd's and i love them. you made a great choice. as far as ammo mine have ate everything, and never had an issues with anything. holsters, look at blade tech, raven concealment, crossbreed with one of those companies you should be able to find something that works for you.

i also suggest that you buy lots of ammo, do dry fire, and attend a training course.

Excellent choice. With the Pearce grip extender, it is very comfortable to hold and shoot. I have the same gun, and I shoot it better than I did the Glock 19 I used to have. I love XD's and am up to four of them now. I want a XDm9 4.5 in OD/BiTone next.

Hey Walkalong, did you switch from XD40 to the 9mm barrel? Can the reverse be done (9mm-40)?

Honestly, the xd won't care what ammo you use, or what lube you use. Use whatever ammo you feel like using, and whatever lube you have laying around.

i am not walkalong obviously but no you can only covert down in caliber not up.
.40 to .375sig or 9mm etc.

can't go wrong with the XD series...

My collection consists of the XDM-40, XDM-9, and a XD40SC.

I used to have a XD40 service, but traded it for the XDM-40.
