 I work for a major sporting goods retailer (begins with an "A") behind the gun counter and one of our customers proceeded to buy most of our 9mm FMJ (about 4 cases worth). He said he is buying as much practice ammo as he can because there is a tax increase that amounts to a dollar a box (of 50 rounds) starting March 29. I have not heard of any tax nor price increase in particular. Any one else???

I have not heard of any such tax.

I did hear that a tax of 10 cents per round was proposed in the Chicago area, but it was mostly to make up for budget shortfalls, rather than punish gun owners (a lot of other tax ideas were floated), but it was eventually shot down (pun definitely intended).

I don't believe there's any substance behind such a rumor. No ammo tax exists in California, one of the least gun-friendly states. I don't think the idea of a tax of that nature would go over very well, even in California.

Possibly not a "tax", per se, but some sort of "surcharge" in your state that was approved without your knowing?

A few years ago, a friend of mine griped when he learned that the California State government had approved a "surcharge" of .50 cents on a carton of cigarettes. His gripe was actually justified, for the clerk at Costco charged him for the price, then the "surcharge", and the total was subjected to the state sales tax. In essence, it was a tax ON a tax!

Several years ago, in California, a bill was submitted that would have imposed a 5-cents per ROUND tax on factory-loaded ammo....including .22LR ammo. It didn't pass, but a couple of years later, it was re-submitted....only it had been increased to a 10-cents per ROUND tax! Had it been passed, a box of 50 rounds of .22 ammo would have cost more in TAXES than the actual cost of the ammo!

Lest any of you forget, the late/former U.S. Senator from New York, Daniel Patrick Moynihan, authored federal legislation that would have imposed a 10,000% increase in the federal taxation on factory-loaded ammo. During one of his last interviews, prior to his death, he said that he had not submitted the legislative document because "the timing wasn't right". That legislative document was NOT destroyed, and was supposedly handed-off to a certain U.S. Senate "hopeful" (at the time) named Hillary Clinton! She supposedly VOWED to submit the legislation "when the time is right"....and, YES, she just HAPPENS to be in the run for the Presidency! Can you imagine a 10,000% increase in the federal taxes on ammo? I'm sure that it would be...."For the children"!

Just think....your ENTIRE paycheck for a little "plinking" with a .22 rifle! Oh, and if you HORDE ammo BEFORE an absurd tax increase, you might be required to get an "arsenal" license....and pay even MORE taxes!

(50 years ago, when I was only 10, my dad said, "They (meaning the government) may not be able to take away our guns, but they MAY increase the taxes so much on ammunition that only the rich will be able to shoot or hunt....and that's why you need to learn how to reload ammo!")

Sounds like the Texas sales tax? I wouldn't be surprised if it gets hiked again.

Oh let's not start that crap again......that document was debunked so long ago and so many times it's not even funny.

los angeles tries every year to increase the ammo tax..sen. mark riddly thomas is a major proponent of ammo tax, trigger locks, laser tracking imprinting of ammo etc..he has alot of influence and panders to the usual suspects...while the ammo tax / "gun calming" has not passed yet .. they will keep trying until it does...

TSRA doesn't say anything about it. It could be a hike in the local sales tax, but that wouldn't equal a dollar a box.

Should be very close. Last time I bought 9mm at red's it was ~$11 a box of 50. Push the sales tax another .5% and it's $1 of tax per box.

THE REAL FACTS

Well again, any story that starts out

"I heard at a gun store........."

The House Ways and Means Committee approved a school property tax relief measure Wednesday that would give the state the highest sales tax in the country.

The bill, approved by a 5-4 vote, also would expand the tax to include bottled water and motor vehicle repair services and would raise the cigarette tax to $1.42 a pack.

A proposed increase in the sales tax has been a cornerstone of most of the school revenue-generating proposals, but the rate has been contentious.

The plan approved today would increase the rate from the current 6.25 percent to 7.25 percent.

The proposal could face a tougher time in the Texas Senate.

The tax bill is designed to offset reduced school property taxes and increase the state's share of the public education money.

So, it's still in process, and would not take effect until Sep 1 even if it gets through and is signed by the Gov.

The Gov made as one of the cornerstones of his campaign, the promise to keep property taxes down. Well, this is what happens when you do that, but no one wants to actually cut SPENDING.

Yes there is a tax. Ammo is going to be nonexistent within months. In fact I've got some for sale right here! Did I mention I work for (insert cartridge company name here)? :neener:

st

In Michigan, our Constitution has been interpreted by our former AG to mean that the localities can NOT bring on any new taxes, prohibitions, etc re: firearms ammo, etc.

You guys should have your states adopt a Constitution someday. :neener:

Agreed...disinformation.

You guys should have your states adopt a Constitution someday.

LOL...ANOTHER constitution for Texas??? What is that...like constitution number 7? It wouldn't keep that long either considering Texas constitutions get amended some 5-6 times a year.

Thats funny, a guy from a sporting goods store starting with an "A" told me the same thing. He was working behind the counter too. With the guns and handgun ammo. A buddy of mine was getting ammo and called me with the news. I went it and picked up a few hundred rounds and was told the same thing.

UPDATE: There WAS a price increase on various types of ammo. It was not a overt tax increase but an overall increase that went from a $1.00 to several dollars a box on the brand name premium ammo. The inventory control people were here at least 3 hours changing prices..... Kinda wished I put a few boxes away yesterday:banghead: :cuss: .
