as a customer entered our store this week, he proclaimed that his Hi-Point
9mm would not shoot the 9mm Luger round~! He professed to say, "it will
only shoot those Hollow Heads and those Ball Points". After a good internal
laugh, we figuered out that he was referring to 9mm hollow points, and fmc
(full metal case) rounds. Just thought I would share this moment in history,
and ammo 101~! ;) :D :D

Hello Ala Dan. Hope you are well. I have to think this fellow is new to the world of firearms. I hope you gave him a mini tutorial and/or gave him the name of this forum. It just struck me..does your shop have an attached range? And if so, did the range officer stand directly behind him as he shot his hollow heads and ballpoints? My gut wants to cut him some slack (we all had to start somewhere) but my brain wants to scream..."do some reading"!

Wow.
bad day, or what, I know a few local shops that would correct, some even nicely
others would laugh in his face, and at least one would point to the door saying nothing (the other counter guy would probably be on the floor by then)

Speaking of terminology, why is it some companies are getting away from using "FMJ?" Are they trying to distance themselves from military terminology?

Alright fella's, we did not actually laugh in this guy's
face, OK~?We called him off too the side, and very politely corrected
his terminology; ashe is most definitely a "newbie" to the shooting world.
Here is the details of our new and expanded business:

Simmons Sporting Goods
2001-2nd Ave North
Bessemer, AL 35020
PX: (205) 425-4720 or (205) 426-0490
Clay and Peter Simmons = Co Owner's

Oh heck that's nothing. My shop is located not far from an inner-city area so I get lots of inner city dwellers.
Fellow on Friday came in and asked "do you have any gun posters?" Gun posters? I thought maybe he meant like Oleg's stuff. But he didnt' seem the type. "Yeah, gun posters. Like you get at the range."
He meant "targets."

Another customer came looking for ammo for his "trey eight" or .38spc. And by this time I am long past even raising an eyebrow at "deuce-deuce" (.22), "deuce-five" (.25, also "deuce pappy"), "four-five", "K-bullets" (7.62x39), and "Seven" (.357magnum). Sometimes I even tell a customer that this pistol is a "four five."

I know right where you are Dan. Been by there many times just never had an opportunity to stop in. Maybe soon though.

Just like in any profession that deals with the general public. Just when you think that you have seen it all....... "I don't know why them there BIG bullets cost so much cuz they are easier to build than those little 22 ones.".......:banghead: :D

I won't pretend that I know all of the terms and abbreviations that are used in the ammunition world, but I believe that some of these terms are commonly used synonymously, when in fact they are actually making reference to two different bullet designs. By way of example:

TMJ = total metal jacket = jacket covers the entire bullet, including the base.

FMJ = full metal jacket = jacket covers all areas of the outside of the bullet, but may not cover the base.

If you looked at a loaded two loaded cartridges, one FMJ and one TMJ, they might look identical. However, if you pulled the bullet you could find that the FMJ often has exposed lead on the back side of the bullet.

Beyond that, your guess is as good as mine :)

I have heard targets called posters before...because targets usually refers to other people or vehicles...it' just a matter of context.

In LE circles, most of the references to bullet calibers used above are pretty common...the most common being the fore-tay...but I had never heard trey eight or K-bullets before. Make's you wonder if the 5.56x45mm is the R-bullet

No.
TMJ sounds better to most buyers then "Electro-Plated bullet", which most all of them are.
