Took a trip to a local gun show today and ended up coming home with a Marlin Model 60; the old style with the 18 round magazine tube. The wood looked almost perfect and the warning sticker about only using 22lr was still on the bottom; the bore was nice and shiny. The only flaw was some of the bluing was coming off around the muzzle.

They dealer was asking $140 out the door. I ended up doing a little horse trading with an S&W 38spl I had for the rifle plus $135 cash.

I had to take the rifle out to the car to keep walking around the show. Within 10 minutes of walking around with the Marlin several people kept coming up to me asking if I was selling it :D

Can't wait to take it out to the range and shoot it!

That's what I was thinking too!

You traded ANYTHING with S&W on it plus $135 for a Model 60? :what:

So you gave him your S&W for $200 bucks????

I hope you mean YOU got $135.00 and the 22, and not the other way around. If not, do you have any other revolvers you'd like to sell for $5.00?

Sure - they wanted to give you 75 bucks.

Not too long ago I had 3 60's and decided I didn't so many so I took one to the flea market to sell. I must have got 50 offers to buy it but they all offered me $80 or $85 for it. They only sold for around $100 at the time but every flea market type trader wanted to make a couple of bucks off that rifle. I held out and got $90 for it knowing I could have gotten another $10 if I had wanted to wait for it. But I didn't. I just wanted to sell it quick and be done with it. But those guns are basically money at flea markets and gun shows. Everyone knows the local price they're bringing and they all want to buy wholesale and sell retail. I don't see how they ever make money with no more mark up than that but they're out there all the time. I think they go for the fun of it to be honest.

BTW I knew he got money and the 60 for his pistol right off the bat. It wouldn't have made any sense to only get $5 trade on his S&W.

This would equal $275 worth of trade and cash for the S&W .38

Sorry if I wasn't clear. The dealer gave me the rifle and $135. I basically go $275 for my S&W .38. I have many revolvers and that one was just sitting in the safe. I ended up breaking even on what I paid for the revolver 5 years ago.

The latest iteration of the Model 60 is running about $157-163 on-line, NEW. This doesn't necessarily include shipping, or the transfer costs, and state tax.

I have a pair of them, and they work quite well. I like the older Model 75 Glenfield carbine version much more.

Now, while I have a "Remlin" model that is now a few years old and I am more than happy with the fit and finish and my groups of .7" at 50 yards with it, there are many out there that would prefer to pay the $150 for a 30 year old version (with more magazine capacity too) instead of the current Model 60s.

To these folks, a new model 60 and an old model 60 aren't apples to apples for cost comparisons. I got no problem with those I guys. I probably won't buy a new Marlin again after my latest customer service experience with them.

I saw a new 60 last night that was really nice looking. It had a walnut stained stock that actually looked like walnut. It wasn't I'm sure but the wood they use is generally pretty good but a bit soft (birch). It actually looked like it might be laminate on the new one I saw though. It was behind glass so I couldn't get a good look at it without getting someone to open the case at Wallyworld and I wasn't interested in buying one so... Whatever it was a different look for the 60 that I haven't seen before and I've owned my share of them. Still own 2 I guess.

Years ago, I performed animal control hunts at our USAF Base around the flight line. Jack rabbits have a habit of running across the active runways. The issued rifle was a Glenfield model 60 with a cheap 4X Bushnell scope. I killed several dozen jacks each year, mostly night shooting with a powerful spotlight. The rifle performed flawlessly. I also set out traps to catch pheasants and other critters that were unwelcome near the airfield.

I have had one that I traded a neighbor for back in the 70's with a 4x bushnell on it if I remember correctly.

I bet I haven't shot it since 1978 and it just sits in the safe. Doesn't see a lot of use and I've wondered what it was worth. In my case I just have other rifles that I prefer to shoot more.
