I just received a new CVA optima V2. After opening up the box the barrel has a bunch of junk in it. (Will post photos when I get home).
I’m brand new to muzzle loaders, is this normal? Or should I be making a call?

thanks
Dan

"A bunch of junk in it." A clearer description would certainly help. Hard to figure out what JUNK is.
Have you read the instruction booklet for that Muzzle Loader ?
I believe it comes with a preventative in the barrel. Instructions also tell you to clean it out prior to firing.
Muzzle loaders are different. Very important you read the instructions.
Once you get it figured out. Enjoy. :)

AGREED..., it sounds like rust preventative. ;)
There's a "stupid little book" that comes with the rifle. At least that what I've heard a lot of fellows call the operator's manual on any new rifle they've acquired. Read it, please, twice.

CVA has a vested interest in the new owner being successful with their product, and then liking that new product so much, that the new owner tells others how much the product is liked. CVA will clue you in on any quirks that their product has. It's likely they will tell you what loads and what bullets work the best, and how to keep the rifle in top condition. ;)

CVA muzzle loaders are sent to the Spanish proof house to be proof tested before being sold.
They're not cleaned out afterwards but are shipped with the powder residue still in the bore.
At least that's the condition that every "unfired" muzzle loader was in that I've ever bought.
Sometimes they sit in the box for years before they're cleaned for the first time.

That’s not a good picture. Shipped off to who knows how long a storage with hygroscopic powder residue in the works. Yikes. :(

It's possible that some company's guns get swabbed but not thoroughly cleaned.
Or maybe they spray some protective gunk in the bore.
There always a worry about rust but I've never found any.

One reviewer on Midway complained that they sold him a used gun because the barrel was dirty.
He didn't realize that that they aren't cleaned at the factory to be spotless.
Midway's customer service told him that he could send the gun back because they didn't know why a new gun would be dirty either.
He said that he was going to keep the gun anyway because he had already sighted it in.
Then another poster replied why it was dirty.

Sorry it took a bit to respond I literately opened the gun up and had to put it away to go to work. I’m sitting down to read the book today as I had planned to do.

Was just curious if anyone has seen this before. Photos attached.

I can’t see what you see, but my Lyman came packed with some form of grease. I don’t recall what was suggested to remove it, but it worked easily enough as I recall. Is it not grease you are seeing?

My bad. Found the info on page 5.

Thanks everyone.

it seems some what grease like it was just in large clumps which threw me off.

It's not only brand new muzzle loaders that come with dirty barrels.
Many people ask about why every gun can be so dirty and fouled when purchased new.
And from the thread and video below, they've all been test fired to some extent.
Did you notice any other evidence of test firing on the breech plug, receiver, firing pin, bore or muzzle crown?

Now that you have the packing grease figured out...
I recommend trying loose powder. I gave my nephew the same model muzzleloader you have.
It shoots best with between 90 and 110 grains of fffg or 777. The projectile didn't seem to affect accuracy.
