Im about to order an m1 carbine from a website but I havent done it and dont know what to do really. How do it set up a FFL transfer. I have a dealer in mind to do it with. Would I give the cost of the gun plus the transfer fee to the dealer and have them order it or do I give the money to the people the gun is coming from and have them ship it to the FFL dealer.

Different FFLs and companies handle it different ways.

1) Some FFLs want you to give them the money and they order.

2) Some FFLs are ok with you ordering and sending (or faxing) in their license to the company.

3) Some companies are ok with you paying and sending the FFL.

4) Other companies demand that either they contact the FFL to confirm the order or that the FFL send a copy of the license.

Just depends. Ask the company and the FFL you are going to use for the transfer.

FWIW, my experience is mostly #2 and 3 above. Or, I just buy milsurps on my 03 and have them shipped direct to my house.

Well regardless of the policys of the website they will have to send it to your local FFL. Go talk to your dealer and get a copy of his FFL. (I'd recommend getting a copy signed by the dealer with any color ink but black)

Make sure you find out how much your dealer charges and don't pay more than $25. If he wants more just go somewhere else.

When I order online I normally pay the seller and then send them the FFL by mail. Some will accept a fax (ok'd by the batfe) but most want a hard copy. When you're on the phone with them ask them about you dealer. Last time I bought something from thegunsource.com they already had my dealer's FFL on file and saved me the time and trouble.

And most FFL's, at least locally, won't give you a copy of their license, you drop off an envelope with the address on it, or give them the seller's fax number and they send it.

Typically for me:
1.) Order product online and pay by CC
2.) Call my ffl and have him fax a copy of his ffl to the seller
3.) seller ships gun to ffl
4.) pickup and pay my local ffl about $20 for his time

Foxtrot,
I have found that a pawn shop with an FFL usually charges less for a transfer than a gun shop. Here in Dallas, most gun shops want $50 for a transfer, but the pawn shops charge $25. Check your area and see who has the best price.
