anyone tried the NEW wolf ammo? It apparently has an "advanced" polymer coating instead of the crappy laquer coating of the old wolf stuff.

Is it less prone to gunking up your pistol than the old stuff? Any other comments?

kokapelli, can you expand on that comment at all? What calibers have you tried, what firearms were used, what malfunctions did you have etc?...

What caliber gave you problems? What were the problems? What gun?

I've been very happy with Wolf in 9mm, 45ACP, 40S&W, and 762x39.

The Wolf .380ACP didn't work very well -- problems with extraction in both guns I've tried.

arinvolvo, I used it in my Bersa Thunder 380 and KelTec P-3AT. Absolutely would not chamber in the Bersa. Some chambering problems in the KT too. When I did get it working some in the KT, sparks and powder where flying everywhere. Even had soot on my face.

Cave Lupus

I've got an Auto-Essex-Colt-Wilson-Brown-NoNameBarrel-Springfield,et cetera, beater that I threw together outta junk/spare/rejected parts that I
abuse wantonly, shamelessly, and often...and I won't shoot that stuff in it.
You may quote me...

Cheers!

wow...overwhelming

Only experience i have with it is the 223 that my brother buys for his AR....and it works withouhg fail.

I've used it in my Russian SKS. Worked perfectly - as has all the Wolf ammo I've ever used. You just don't get green fingers with the new stuff.

I have never had a problem with the new or the old Wolf ammo. And I have shot a fair amount of it.
In excess of ten thousand rounds.

Ok here is my .02 cents....

.223=worked fine

7.62*39=worked fine

9mm=worked fine

45acp=worked fine

.380=didnt work in my P3AT:fire:

Some love it...some hate it...me I love the stuff

BTW...I am looking for a VHS or Ripped DVD of the Tales of the Gun episodes...I had one that had 6 or 7 that I taped off of T.V..it finally died..I will trade ya some gunleather for a copy if ya have one...pm me if ya wanna haggle:D

I also had bad results with the Wolf .380. Don't tar the entire product line for one bad product.

Most 380's are blowback, its easy to see how steel cases might have too much adhesion to extract reliably. Kel-Tec P3AT are not blowback, they can be finikey about ammo, but mine worked with everything but the steel cased Wolf, Silver Bear and Brown Bear I tried -- meaning its probably the steel cases and not Wolf brand at fault, the Silver Bear was almost usable. the nickel plating probably reduced adhesion but just not quite enough for reliable function. Had same problems in my FEG SMC-380 so I concluded it was the ammo and not the gun since neither gun has problems with any of the other brass cased ammo I've tried (including my reloads 3.7gr Unique and NBC 95gr hard cast lead RN, so as a Unique shooter Wolf don't seem all that dirty to me :).

Isn't the Makarov blowback ? I shot half a case of "old" Wolf out of mine.

I've only shot it in 7.62x39 out of my SKS. FWIW, I never had problems with the old green laquered cases (1000 rounds) other than the odd stench when I fire it. But I guess too many people were complaining about the laquer so they changed it. As noted, it's still steel cased so I would stick with the "commie ammo for commie guns" advice. I've shot about 400 rounds of the new cased 7.62x39 and for me, the only difference is the color. Same great reliability, same gawd-awful stench, and same so-so accuracy. Haven't been paying enough attention to clean-up time, so can't comment.

I have put 500 rounds through my SA Mil-spec and it loves it. Reasonably accurate, reliable and not any dirtier than UMC or WWB.

I'm actually running a test on it to see how much, if any, wear it causes on the extractor and ejector. So far, none.

Looks like we have a .380 problem. The Mak fires 9x18, so that is OK, particularly since it is a commie gun.

P3AT also had problems with Silver Bear(?) first shoot. Thought it was the gun. Turns out it was the ammo.

9mm, .45 acp, .223 all work fine for me in all platforms.

thanks for the info. I'm mostly looking at wolf to save money on .45. I can get Miwall reloads form my .40sw for the same price as the wolf, so why bother (the miwall reloads are so far, 1000 rounds, very good).

I've used it.

I've used Wolf and probably will continue to use it in my Bersa Thunder .380, with no feed/fire problems at all. In my experience it's fairly dirty compared to Winchester white-box ammo, though. As for the sparks flying, no, I haven't experienced that. And since the Bersa always gets cleaned after a few hours at the range, the excess dirt is more of a nuisance than a problem. I could see if you planned on firing hundreds of rounds without cleaning, it might be an issue. At 5.99 per 50 compared to 9.00 for the Winchester, it's hard to resist not picking up a box or two of Wolf when I am in the gunshop. Accuracy wise, POI is the same as the Winchester, and the Speer I use for carry ammo -- at 7 yards.

re:Things that make you go "Hmmm"

Other things are:

Bullet diameters varying as much as .003 inch...

Powder charges that vary a full grain...

Bullet concentricity varying as much as .004 inch...

Bullet weight varying as much as 7 grains...

Bullet pull that varies from very high to low enough to allow .025-inch
setback upon chambering...No doubt contributing to the:

bang bang bang BANG bang *pop*bang BANG...syndrome.

These things were found in three different lots bought over a period of 3 months.

Ya'll go ahead...I'll keep my distance from the stuff.

I have 2 boxes left over from a case I bought 2 years ago. I'll probably shoot them up the next time I go plinking out at "the Pit".
I had no intention of buying any more since I can buy Blazer aluminum for only about $2 or less more.

However, if they have changed and improved it, I'd buy 2 boxes to try.
If the price stays the same.

Yes the Mak is blowback but steel case ammo is pretty much what it was designed for. Take a look at the extractor "claw" or "hook" you'll find its massive compared to most other guns easily gripping 3X the rim area of the extractors on my P3AT or SMC-380.

I prefer the Norinco green box ammo for my Mak when I can find it, followed by Silver Bear -- but it only fits one of the two 10 rnd mags I have for my "wide body" Mak.
