Rally calls for tougher gun laws

An anti-violence gathering seeks action from lawmakers.

By Alan Morrell
Staff Writer

(August 6, 2003) — Ethel Dix knows the meaning of tough love.

Two months ago, Dix realized her 15-year-old grandson was headed in the wrong direction.

He ran the streets, she said, stayed out all night and got involved in drugs.

So Dix did what she felt she had to do to save the teen. She had a “Persons In Need of Supervision†warrant issued, getting the courts involved to keep her grandson on the straight and narrow.

“I took hold of this child when I saw the road he was on,†said Dix of Adams Street, whose daughter, Dameta Gibson — her aforementioned grandson’s mother — was murdered in 1991.

“Now he’s in counseling and has a probation officer. I want parents to realize there’s help for them, they just need to reach out,†Dix said.

Dix shared her experiences during an anti-violence rally held Tuesday in front of the Monroe County Office Building.

Participants collected signatures on a petition in an attempt to pressure lawmakers to toughen gun laws.

Pastor Joy Powell — an anti-violence activist whose son, David Wright, was murdered in 2001 — walked the sidewalk with a bullhorn, pleading with passersby to sign the petition.

“I’m asking for the whole state to adopt tougher gun laws,†she said, waving petitions that she said contained nearly 2,000 signatures.

“I’m fed up from the set-up. We need everyone to come together,†Powell said.

Alan Whitcomb, a member of the Task Force to Reduce Violence, said the community needs to be continuously involved to make a difference.

“We don’t need sporadic events,†he said. “What we’ve got to do is have events like this, to have an ongoing presence.â€

Then there’s the tactic Dix took - a position advocated by Rochester Police Chief Robert Duffy and Mayor William A. Johnson Jr. as better than seeing a loved one in prison or the morgue.

“I was so glad someone saved this child before he was murdered,†Dix said. “Anything I can do to turn (other) kids around, I’ll do it.â€

[scratching head] If you're FOR more gun control, then that means you're PRO-violence, since it's been proven that more guns=less crime, not the opposite. Someone needs to set Pastor Joy straight. I wish these pro-violence people would learn more from us anti-violence people.

Good point, but its very well to late. The anti-gun emotional retoric is so ingrained in folks like Joy Powell, that no matter what and how many facts we present,it will do no good at all. She calls herself a pastor, which means she has a church following that hangs onto her every word. To listen to a progunner and confirm the validity of facts the progunner/RKBA supporter is stating would mean she'd loose community, governmental and monied support from those around her.

You have a rotten kid....

...just great. Dix has a rotten kid/grandkid and needs someone else's tax dollars to keep him/her on the
straight and narrow.

Hey Dix - how about taking care of this problem yourself??

Rochester, NY is brutal - might as well be Berkley. Man do I hate this crap...

XS hit it on the head - the lady wants to help, but the first thing she does is get the .gov involved?? I am really hoping that was more of a last resort.

Let's see, when I was a teenager, if I got out of line, my parents didn't call the government in. My dad whipped my @#$ into shape in short order. I would think that keeping a kid on the straight and narrow is a parent's job, not the government's, but heck, I'm just a white male gun nut, what do I know?

100 years ago, this would have read,

"So Dix did what she felt she had to do to save the teen. Her husband went out back to the woodshed, got a large piece of kindling and beat the hell out of the lad. The boy soon saw the error of his ways and now is quite docile."

But we've 'progressed' so much since those days.....

Did anyone else notice how carefully they DIDN'T mention how many sheeple attended that "rally"? If there had been a large crowd you can bet the media would have been shouting about it. Anybody know how many were actually there?

Heh. We had a thing to keep us in line where I grew up. That thing was called adults.

Sure wish we had more adults these days. I reckon that the problem is that Eloi/sheeple never mature.

Thank you God, for delivering me - your humble but unworthy servant - from the east coast.
