I wanted something to fill the gap between my Glock 26 and full sized pistols (G34, 1911). Found a used Sig P228, and love it. Its my first Sig, but after 100 rds, I now know what all the fuss is about. And mine is an old, fairly well used example.

The DA pull is smooth, and the SA pull is light and crisp, after the takeup at least. Despite the higher bore axis or whatever, I didn't notice any more muzzle flip than any other 9mm.

As a lefty, this gun is great, I can work the decocker easily with my trigger finger. The slide release is more difficult, although I usually slingshot my autoloaders.

It seems that every maker now is going towards rails, internal locks, etc, and IMHO, not much of that is actually needed for a carry weapon. This 228 strikes me as just about ideal....

The pistol itself:

The very first 13rd magazine I put through the gun, 25', standing freehand. Great group for me

Very nice, I hate rails too on a carry gun. If you call and sweet talk Sig they might refinish it for you. Good luck

Congrat's On The Find

I'm glad you found out what all the 'fuss is 'bout; as the SIG-SAUER P228
is probably the best balanced handgun in the U.S. firearms market. I have
a very early, 1990 West German model stamped "Herndon, VA" as the import
city; NOT Exeter, New Hampshire. The run of P228's has dried up the last
several year's, and they are gett'in really scarce; unless you find someone
who has hoarded one throughout the P228's existence~!:uhoh: Again,
congrat's and enjoy.;) :D

Just bought one myself after hearing they were never coming out again. I am fairly impressed with the gun and only paid 400.00. I liked the p229 so i knew i would enjoy the p228. I am going to send mine to tripp research and get it refinished in a hard chrome. What kind of holster are you using with your's?

Greeting's pablo45 My Friend-

Since my P228 is a "safe queen", and the only 9m/m I currently
own; I can't recommend a holster. But, I carry a 3" Kimber Stainless
Ultra Carry II .45ACP in a real leather rig from the fine folks over at
Kirkpatrick Leather of Laredo,Texas~!;) :D

I have three that I use for my P228. My OWB holster is a Slide Guard from High Noon Holsters:
http://www.highnoonholsters.com/Product_Line/_Slide_Guard/_slide_guard.html.

The other two are IWB holsters. Another High Noon, this one a Tail Gunner:
http://www.highnoonholsters.com/Product_Line/_Tail_Gunner_W_Clip/_tail_gunner_w_clip.html.

Finally a Texas Heritage by Tucker Gunleather:
http://rlcompanyusa.stores.yahoo.net/teheiwb.html.

The advantage of the Texas Heritage is the tuckable clips. I can carry without a jacket, a tucked in dress shirt conceals it fine. The advantage of the Tail Gunner is its quick on/off feature. The advantage of the Slide Guard is the ability to carry with pants that are too tight for IWB.

All three are comfortable for all day carry (I usually have it on from 7 am - 11 pm).

I had another OWB holster, a plain black cowhide Rafter S:
http://raftersgunleather.com/Holsters.htm.

I probably should have kept it, since it carried the P228 high and tight and was quite comfortable. At the time I sold it I didn't think I needed two OWB holsters for the same gun.

3 dot tritiums, I think they are OEM? No markings left except for an 8 stamped into both the front and rear sights...

I have really been thinking of getting the SIG Lites. I have the stock contrast on my 228 and I shoot pretty well with it but "dog" you did well for your first outing!! -------- BTW, I love my 228, my favotite 9mm by far!!

Picked up a nice 220 yesterday, shot both sigs today, and did horrible! Definitely the shooter though

I came across a brand new P228 at a gun shop- they wanted $900+tax.
I don't want it that badly, who the heck would?

I have one that I treasure although it gets little use because GLOCKs and now the S&W M&P are easier to shoot for me. I have difficulty with the grip size and trigger reach, even with a TJ's "short" (which isn't really "short" per se, just narrower and rounder) trigger, not to mention the DA/SA trigger pull transition. But you can't beat its accuracy and reliability. The frame-mounted decocker is much easier to use than any slide-mounted safety/decocker, and IMO SIGs have the best factory (standard, not night) sights.

This gun seems to have been well used, so I would recommend replacement of at least the trigger bar spring, which I have had break (OK, so it has one weakness;)) and render the gun inoperable.

If you want to know when it was made, look at the underside of the slide just in front of the frame. As well as some odd-looking marks (which are proof marks) you will see a two-letter date code. I don't have the reference in front of me, but mine is KF indicating 1995.
