Newt Gingrich: Nancy Pelosi House Leadership a 'Disaster'

Ex-U.S. House Speaker Newt Gingrich said Wednesday that the thought of California Rep. Nancy Pelosi becoming the next leader of the House and being third in line to the presidency is frightening.

"The prospect of her bringing San Francisco values and a whole attitude on foreign policy that is, I think, an attitude of weakness and appeasement and surrender, I think, would be a disaster for the country," the outspoken Republican said.

Gingrich said keeping power out of the hands of Pelosi, the House minority leader, and other Democrats is one of the reasons he was in South Carolina this week raising money for the GOP.

On Wednesday, Gingrich was at a fundraiser for Ralph Norman, the White House's chosen opponent for U.S. Rep. John Spratt, the 5th District Democrat who is Pelosi's assistant minority leader.

To suggest that "any Democrat is for appeasement is ridiculous" and "shows how desperate the Republicans are," Pelosi spokesman Brendan Daly said. "We know we have a dangerous world out there," he said, but "fear-mongering is not helpful to the situation."

The former Georgia congressman said he wakes up every day worried about national security and the potential loss of U.S. cities to nuclear attacks.

"If you think, as I do, that we're in the early stages of an emerging third world war, the world is truly dangerous on a scale that I think, in a worst case, could lead to losing several American cities to nuclear weapons in our lifetime," he said.

Gingrich, who says his decision on seeking the Republican presidential nomination in 2008 will wait until late next year, says there are plenty of reasons to worry about nuclear bombs destroying U.S. cities.

"Start with the North Korean drive to get nuclear weapons and ICBMs (intercontinental ballistic missiles), then go to the Iranian drive to get nuclear weapons, then go to the fact that Pakistan has probably between 50 and 100 nuclear weapons with an unstable dictatorship," he said. Then, look at al-Qaida's willingness to "kill as many Americans as they can find" and Iran's recruitment of suicide bombers, he said.

"If you have active, overt enemies who are religiously different and who believe that killing you would be a good thing in their religious terms and they're willing to die in order to kill you," Gingrich said, "how hard is it to imagine a suicide bomber willing to walk in with a nuclear weapon?"

To deal with the threat, he said, "we want to replace the North Korean regime. We want to replace the Iranian regime and the Syrian regime. We would like to replace them without using military force if we can."

Last week, U.S. Sen. Joe Biden, D-Del., was in Greenville and touched on nuclear threats in an interview.

Biden, who is seeking his party's nomination in 2008, said the Bush administration is getting diplomacy wrong on dealing with those threats. Iran, he said, is a decade-away threat but North Korea is far more urgent.

"The prospects of Iran having a deliverable nuclear weapon that can endanger U.S. interests in the region or here in the next foreseeable future is very, very, very low," Biden said.

With time, the United States has options from diplomacy to political changes within Iran, Biden said. But the Bush administration isn't talking directly with Iran or North Korea, he said.

"Since when was America was so weak that we have to fear talk?" Biden said.

i have a lot of complaints with several current republicans in congress,
but having Nancy Pelosi as third in line for the presidency is a much more major concern to me...

To suggest that "any Democrat is for appeasement is ridiculous" and "shows how desperate the Republicans are," Pelosi spokesman Brendan Daly said. "We know we have a dangerous world out there," he said, but "fear-mongering is not helpful to the situation."

Big Media smiled when they printed this. 99% of them ARE for appeasement. Bringing up the other 1% to argue for fair treatment is ridiculous.

And it's not the dangerous world anyone fears. It's the dangerous America the Ds want to create: a Stalin-style police state where the government rules and people obey.

"The prospects of Iran having a deliverable nuclear weapon that can endanger U.S. interests in the region or here in the next foreseeable future is very, very, very low," Biden said.

Actually, that's true.
"Since when was America was so weak that we have to fear talk?" Biden said.

We don't have to fear talk. We just have to get the communists out of our government, yourself included, pal. Our real enemy is within...and the fools among us have placed them in power.

Well of course Newt thinks Pelosi would be a disaster. He is very conservative, she is very liberal.

Its just more Republican election year fear mongering. They don't want to lose their monopoly on pwer.

You may remember that Ronald Reagan called the Soviet Union "the Evil Empire." Michael Dukakis attacked him for those words, and an editorial writer -- who wasn't particularly a fan of Reagan -- wrote an open letter to Dukakis, in which he asked, "Do you say the Soviet Union isn't the Evil Empire?"

You don't have to be a card-carrying Republican to know Nancy Pelosi is a disaster and would be worse as Speaker of the House.

Newt and company are starting to sound like Horohito..."We need to destroy the enemy before he can hurt us." Even though they haven't done anything yet,and probably won't, unless we heed Newt's advice. Iran is using our policies to advance it's stature in the world. No one in Iran wants war...and particularly not with us. And they know full well that nuking Israel means war with us.

You don't have to be a card-carrying Republican to know Nancy Pelosi is a disaster and would be worse as Speaker of the House.

No doubt she would be bad.
I haven't been so impressed with Republicans' performance since 2000 to care much about who wins the next election. Might be good for the Dems to come out on top, and at least grid-lock the political system.

Having Pelosi third in line gives me a sick to my stomach feeling. :barf:

Iran? Nukes are different when dealing with people that don't care if they live or die and want you dead regardless. Needless to say, crazy people. They could raise total havoc with just suitcase nukes. Second place sucks in this game. The risk is too high to let Iran develop them. They just can't have nuclear weapons, Israel or no Israel.

We don't have to fear talk. We just have to get the communists out of our government, yourself included, pal. Our real enemy is within...and the fools among us have placed them in power.

Newt a communist? Am I reading that right?

And what's with the "America is the bad guy" in this deal? It seams to me Iranian terrorists have been attacking Americans and American interests for decades. I guess we don't have to fear their talk and treat it with credibility huh? After all, it's only nukes. By the way, Dem's or Rep's, we're not the bad guy.

And it's not the dangerous world anyone fears. It's the dangerous America the Ds want to create: a Stalin-style police state where the government rules and people obey.

It's both.

If the Dems win, we will see a new assault weapon ban within one year from Pelosi's swearing in. It will outlaw all semiautomatics in civilian hands. Hunting rifles and shotguns will be registered, including the evil armor piercing .30-.30. Which is

"sold in Hardware stores across america and can shoot through an armor plated limosine"

In Fact any round

"that can pierce a level II policemans vest is a threat and needs to be banned"

I put quotes on that because its what Turddy Kennedy said on the Senate floor, and what he and Nancy put in their model AWB legislation back in 2003, if you all can remember back that far.:)

This Thread is Very gun related, when you consider that the Queen of Gun bans may become the speaker of the house.:barf: :barf: :barf:

No one in Iran wants war

They told you this personally, did they?:scrutiny:

If they don't want war, why are they supporting terrorists in Iraq?

If they don't want war, why did they train and equip the equivallent of a regular Iranian division in Lebanon?

If they don't want war, why did they provide Heb'zbollah with over 12,000 rockets?

If they don't want war, why are they so deeply embarked on a nuclear weapons program?

I agree with Newt....Pelosi as Speaker would be an absolute disaster to the GOP, the US Constitution and Americans at large....

...so the Republicans better start showing us that they are different than the socialists currently in the Democrat Party and dump this globalist, pro-illegal-alien, big-business, Neo-Con crud and get back to the Reagan conservatism that most American citizens actually support in the first place.... :cuss:

...or get used to seeing her scrawny tail in your old chair, Newt. :neener:

Neo-Con crud and get back to the Reagan conservatism that most American citizens actually support in the first place....

I thought the definition of Neoconservatism might be useful.

Neoconservatism
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Neoconservatism is a political current and ideology, mainly in the United States, which is generally held to have emerged in the 1960s, coalesced in the 1970s, and has had a significant presence in the administrations of Ronald Reagan and George W. Bush. It is today most closely identified with a set of foreign policy positions and goals: a hawkish stance during the Cold War and, more recently, in various conflicts in the Middle East. At times there have been distinct neoconservative positions in domestic policies; in particular, the first generation of neoconservatives were generally less opposed to "big government" and to social spending than other U.S. conservatives of the time, though they also called for significant restructuring of the goals and methods of many social programs.

The prefix neo- refers to two ways in which neoconservatism was new: many of the movement's founders, originally liberals, Democrats or from socialist backgrounds, were new to conservatism; neoconservatism was also a comparatively recent strain of conservative thought, which derived from a variety of intellectual roots in the decades following World War II. While some (such as Irving Kristol) have described themselves as "neoconservatives", the term is used today more by opponents and critics of this political current than by its adherents, some of whom reject even the claim that neoconservatism is an identifiable current of American political thought.

Within American conservatism, the foreign policy of neoconservatism is particularly contrasted to isolationism, especially as found in paleoconservatism. While some neoconservatives share of the Christian right critique of a purely secular society, this is not as central to their politics, nor are their policy prescriptions the same.

Neoconservatism is associated with periodicals such as Commentary and The Weekly Standard and some of the foreign policy initiatives of think tanks such as the American Enterprise Institute (AEI) and the Project for the New American Century (PNAC). Neoconservative journalists, pundits, policy analysts, and politicians, often dubbed "neocons" by supporters and critics alike, have been credited with (or blamed for) their influence on U.S. foreign policy, especially under the administrations of Ronald Reagan (1981-1989) and George W. Bush (2001-present).

Newt

Forget the election year posturing....can anyone list ANYTHING other than the usual unbridaled Democratic "obstructionism"...that the adorable Ms. Pelosi has accomplished as the Democratic Minority Leader..??? Huh..???

No one in Iran wants war
Of course they don't WANT war - they'd much rather become the Arab superpower without having to fire a shot. I just don't trust 'em to NOT start a war in their rush to be the regional top dog. It's not like they haven't done tried that before.....

Well of course Newt thinks Pelosi would be a disaster. He is very conservative, she is very liberal.

Its just more Republican election year fear mongering. They don't want to lose their monopoly on pwer.
Bottom line to me (keeping this thread somewhat on track for THR) is that there is no doubt that Nancy Pelosi is one of the biggest enemies to the RKBA that our generation is likely to see. I don't care if you're a one-issue voter or not; Nancy Pelosi gladly, happily, and resolutely wants to see each and every one of us disarmed.

Remember that.
