Next .45

The Glock 21 is by no means a small pistol, it has a full size grip. Dare I say the G21 has a larger grip than the 1911.

There are a LOT of non-1911 .45s to choose from.

At least we made it to the second page before someone ignored the "No Glock" request.

Angel, that's a win in my book, cause ... reading is hard!

My stock Glock joke that I made up when a local dealer said he had 200 Glocks, I said;
"Really, well you go melt those down you will have yourself a right nice start on a Gold Wing."

Like my handle notes, I ride Harleys.

At this point I am now leaning heavily toward either a P220 or a P227. I want to go fondle them both and see which one I like the best. The 227 in a SAS Gen 2 config, which will cost me a bit more, is what I would like to aim for. I am in love with the SRT on my Legion (but then I giggle like a school girl every time I pick that gun up).

It sucks having Champagne taste and a beer pocket book.

The CZ is definitely one that I will be looking at in the future. Since I have a fairly new 1911 I will hold that purchase for later and stick with my next .45 being something that I can carry as well.

The CZ is probably a bit large for that, but would be a good range pistol, I think.

Here is the dimensional data I am looking at, hopefully the format will stick (nope, text boxes suck!);

Numbers are length, height, width and weight
PX4 - 7.68 - 5.41 - 1.42 - 28.2
P227 - 7.1 - 5.5 - 1.5 - 30.5
P220 - 7.1 - 5.5 - 1.5 - 30.4
CZ97B - 8.3 - 5.9 - 1.4 - 40.64

I have smaller hands and the P220, P226, and the P229 all feel great to me. Now compared to a 1911 (which is a very nice comfortable fit for my hand), the CZ97 seems a tad bit larger plus there's some added reach to the trigger. If you have large hands then I would think the P227 or the CZ97 would be a perfect fit for you.

Tex, great suggestion on K5. They did not have any in stock but got to talk to the owner and we are working on something that will allow me to do some horse trading and keep my cost down.

Stay tuned.

Glad it worked out for you, the owner is a pretty nice guy, friendly people who work there. Don't hesitate to let me know if you want to shoot my 227, especially before you decide on a gun. It really is a exceptional firearm. For me in a carry pistol I have to be able follow up on shots quickly and accurately and the 227 without question gives me the ability to do that. Of course all my sigs kinda fall into that category. :)

Yea Tex we need to pick a day for a shoot. You can give my PX4's a go and I can give that 227 a try.

Harley,

If it means anything coming from a dyed in the wool 1911 nut......

Years ago the wife bought herself a Browning BDA of the older flavor not the more modern little fellers but what is now called the Sig 220. If I had to have a non 1911 style .45 ACP pistol, the P220 "American" would be it (her's is a Euro heel mag style but I like it anyway)

When a HS buddy's baby bro got his badge his department allowed the P220 and despite the kid growing up with a 1914 made C number 1911 he carried one on duty over anything else.

I'm not even a semi-auto guy and I'm liking the two Sig 45s we are talking about here. I really don't want to spend the money on another handgun BUT.... I just bought a Sig P320 I'm liking.

I have always had good luck with and enjoyed my 1911's and 1911 derivative guns. Never had any real problem with any of them and never had an issue carrying them condition 1.

After getting into SIG's my 1911's became range or house guns. Not that I don't still like them, but the SIG's I have owned are just stellar examples of what a gun should be.

That teamed with the extremely easy take down, function and accuracy just make my SIG's my go to guns.

Yes, you pay more for them (a lot more these days with elevated gun prices), but I have never had one that I did not feel was worth every penny of their cost. Now, aside from my range specific 1911's, every CCW or HD gun I own is DA/SA decock only and I really like that. I don't have to think about which way the safety does or does not work on a specific gun. They are all ready to go in DA mode all the time.

I like that from my wife's standpoint as well, as she does not spend much time with them and I dont have to worry about her having to think about how to use a gun if something were to happen and I am away.

Of the non-1911 .45 pistols I have owned the Browning BDA would also be my first choice as it was very well made, extremely reliable, and amazingly accurate.

My biggest issue with either the 1911 or the Browning, while they are both great pistoles, just the overall size for carry. I love them on the range and I am a big enough guy that (in the right holster) I could easily carry a standard 1911 sized gun, I just prefer not.

This is not a weight issue for me, it is really a comfort issue. I can hide any of them well enough, but he longer barreled guns are just not comfortable to carry for me. Grip side I prefer full size, but barrel side I want something like the carry versions of the P227P229.

I probably give up a little bit of accuracy, but only out past 15 yards where about the only thing I am doing beyond that is target shooting.

So as a follow up to this story I ordered a P227 SAS Gen 2 through K5. Unfortinutely, a week later I am still waiting on them to get it in and will be traveling now on business. Thus, Friday of next week is the next chance I will have to pick it up.

Thanks for all the advice. Tex, thanks for the tip on K5. Having a .45 that is identical to my P229 will be nice. The SAS version comes with the same SRT trigger set as the P229 Legion, but without the Greyguns trigger. So I ordered that trigger as well.

So late next week I should have both the new P227 and teh Greayguns trigger (which I understand is super easy to install).

Really can't wait!

So, as things happen, I ended up with a P220 instead of a P227. Which is fine as I got a much better deal on the P220 as it was used (almost half the cost). Anyhow, doing a bit of work on it and one thing will be grips.

Thought I would get suggestions on which color. I may ultimately Cerakote this gun Sniper Grey, so keep that in mind. However, I think any of these colors would go well with either the standard Nitrate Black or the Grey I am considering.

So, which color G10?

Spotted some police trade in P220's at a gun show.
Some looked like they'd clean up to look almost NIB for 450 and I've been kicking myself for not grabbing one with night sights.

I've been very intrigued by them ever since. I may cross paths with another one down the road yet.

I like the contrast of the Tan grips personally, even though I'm not a huge fan of the color in general. Do they have Orange?!

I first was thinking about getting a 4 3/4" 1911,
I think you'll be looking for a looooong time. :)
1911s are generally 5", 4 1/4", or 3", although I believe I have seen 3 1/2" and 6" as well.

Okay, if you are interested in something that is not a 1911 and not a GLOCK, have a look at the Kahr P45 (or CW45, maybe PM45, etc).

Single stack, nice trigger, reasonable price, high quality and reliability.

Orionengnr, way past that point.

Gotboostvr, the tan does stand out the most and is a nice contrast. They don't have orange just black, grey, green or tan.

So I have been a bit on a buying/trading spree of late. I am marking it up to a late-life crisis (I had my mid-life crisis at 39 when I bought a Corvett and a Harley, so I need a new excuse at 53). I have thinned out the gun cabinet, sold a few, traded a few and have a few on consignment right now.

Dude, you sound like a bro'. I went thru the same ritual with my "goes-bang" stash.

I was going to suggest that you look at something 1911-exotic ... until I saw you specified a preference for a non-1911 .45acp.

Perhaps a Sig .45 is what most guys would consider the default option, but I've really come to like the (admittedly) old-school S&W 45XX-series autoloaders.
