NFA as a way around 922(r) importation ban!

It seems if you build a NFA firearm like a SBR or AOW constructed from foreign parts you can get by the 10 non-domestic parts nonsense. The importation ban of 'non-sporting' firearms does not apply to NFA weapons because they are not 'sporting' to begin with. So this means after the AWB you could purchase a Steyr AUG or Sig550 receiver and parts kit and fill out a Form 1 to make it a SBR. Then assemble it and it would not be illegal!

Letter from the ATF on the matter:

Hrm, damn Democrat gun laws are too confusing.

The import ban is the product of noted damn Democrat George H. W. Bush.

Now, Tamara, please don't confuse people with the truth. Makes 'em uncomfy, people prefer their illusions. :neener:

Next you might point out the other noted Democrat President Reagan who made it illegal for civilians to own new machineguns in 1986.

Yah yah yah. Those were amendments and bills sponsored by 'crats though so those damn republicrats and dimocrats share the blame.

Please note that 922(r) prohibits assembly of a firearm that is restricted from import - not the importation in and of itself. So yes, if you register an imported firearm (which obviously had to be in configuration "suitable for sporting purposes" to get imported in the first place), then you could add back some of the "evil" features that would otherwise render it non-sporting and thus unimportable. The AWB (for the next two weeks, at least) still applies. However, you still can't import an NFA firearm for civilian use.

For example, you can take, say, a WASR AK, register it as an SBR, add a standard PG w/fixed stock, and open the magwell to accept standard mags. You still couldn't (at least not presently) add a folding stock, thread the muzzle or add a f/h. You also couldn't get a rifle imported in that condition.

Rocko
