Suggestion is save your money for real NV or buy something else with the funds. You will be wasting your money.

Buy once cry once...spending under $500 would not be a productive way to spend your money.

Nobody buys once and cries once and a people do spend big bucks and sometimes cry a whole lot when they over spend/buy. Not everyone that buys a first bike gets one ready for the Tour de France, LOL.

Gen 1 scopes are fine for people who don't have a lot of money, don't have a lot of need for NV, or don't know if they really want to invest in NV. If you understand the limitations of what you are getting, then it isn't an unreasonable product. There is a very good chance that it will work a lot better with a supplemental IR illuminator such as one of these which will require a 1" scope ring to attach to a rail.

Bob, what sort of application do you expect for use with this scope? What sort of terrain do you have where it will be used? What sort of animals do you plan to take at what distances? How often do you plan to use it?

If you need a .22 for coons, beaver, muskrat, etc. this might be very good for you. Spending $3-5K on a Gen III rifle optic for a .22 varmint gun is would considered a bit over the top for a lot of people.

All I can say is if you buy "cheap" NVD's buy from optics planet, at least they will take them back when you are disappointed.

The Sightmark Photon is worth looking at. I have the 4.6x, value for money is OK compared to other NV, with an external IR flashlight it will easily see 300 yards, good for hunting within 100.

By all accounts the 6x version is much better:

In the Gen I tubed NV the Armasight Vampire is the best, although twice the price of the Firefield. Resolution is doubled, there is less edge distortion and when used with an IR Flashlight it is Gen III bright.

I suggest you join and browse www.nightvisionforumuk.com It's the home for discussion of cheap NV hunting.

I'd also look at the ATN X-Sight. It requires an IR illuminator but with it the resolution falls between Gen 2 and Gen 3 NV specs. You also get the benefit of the DVR and a functional (though not amazing) day scope. The early units had some bugs but current firmware seems to be solid. Firmware updates come out frequently and ATN really seems to be full steam ahead on this optic/technology so I'd only expect this optic to get better.

In the sub $1000 I'd be looking at the digital options. The resolution gain is outstanding, they aren't going to be damaged by day light, and most can pull double duty as a day scope. They aren't the equal to a Gen 3 NV option, but for the $400-$700 most of them run you get a lot more performance than Gen 1 NV gives, especially when you add a good IR source.

I'd put up another vote for the Photon in your price range. While it won't be better than Gen 2 or above, the digital night vision image you get with it will be better than most Gen 1 night vision.

I've used the Sightmark a lot, and it's done well for me. I don't really know squat about night scopes, but I've shot a lot of hogs around the 100 yd. mark and had no problem doing it.

The overwhelmingly positive reviews on them is very surprising for night vision in its price range. May be worth a shot.

Thought I would bump this thread. I put the Sightmark Photon 4.6x on my Amazon wish list and ended up with it for Christmas. With this $37 IR light attached, it actually works very well. I have yet to fire a shot with it mounted but my first impression is very good.

It will initially go on my Ruger American Rimfire .17HMR with a DIP one piece picatinny rail. Mounting has been a bit of a challenge as the scope has to be mounted a good ways to the rear for proper eye relief. I finally settled on the DNZ Freedom Reaper mount, turned backwards, which should arrive tomorrow. Might have to go to the full length EGW mount or put it on my Savage instead.

Atn x sight for sure. Read the user supported Facebook page to get an idea of issues and to see video. I own two and love then
