Alright, here's the deal.

I am looking for a scope to mount a Tikka T3 lite in 30-06. I have found a Nikon Prostaff for $138 shipped. Is this a good scope? It has really good reviews on MidwayUSA, but I thought I would get a second opinion.

Anyone used one of these scopes?

I have also found a Bushnell Elite 4200 for $222 shipped. Is this scope vastly superior to the Nikon?

I that exact scope on my Ruger M77 7x57 and it works just fine. I can't speak personally about the Bushnell, but from what I have heard it is a very nice scope as well.

I have that scope on my Browning A-bolt 30.06, a Sig 556, and a Ruger 10/22 target. In all cases the scope has performed flawlessly from the higher recoil of the .06 to the plinking of the 10/22. No mag nification issues at low to high power, no parralex issues. IMHO, great scope for the money.

Prostaffs are good but spend the $50 or $60 and get the Nikon BuckMaster. It is very close in optics and build quality to the Monarch, which is the top of Nikon's line. The light gathering is greater and you also get the finger adjustable dials instead of having to use a coin or screw driver. I have three Buckmasters on my model 70s and am able to hunt from the crack of dawn to the brink of night because of the light gathering capability.

I have two, and like them alot. Can't beat that price. If eye releif is an issue, you might want to look at the buckmaster or monarch as they are a bit shallow. I have one on a model 70 .270, and another on an H&R Single-shot .243, both shoot great & hold zero. Awesome nikon glass.

I have also found a Bushnell Elite 4200 for $222 shipped. Is this scope vastly superior to the Nikon?

I have an Elite 3200, and it is a better scope. More eye relief, comparable if not slightly better glass. If the extra $90 is in your budget, I would probably go with the Bushnell.

I would also look into DNZ (deadnuts) mounts for your Tikka; having used them on my last rifle purchase, I doubt I ever use anything else.

Elite 4200 is quite good, but eye relief is short. I'd go for the Nikon Team Primos 3-9x40. $199, and it's a rebadged monarch.

get the buckmasters 3-9x40 instead...it's a MUCH better looking scope for like $50 more...I have them on everything I shoot...they also have re-zeroable mini-cams under the dustcovers and a fast focus eye-piece that I've never had to touch after setting (although on my .22LR during a match I do make sure the letters on the target apear clear) I guarantee you you can "shoot the box" and return to zero with one as well as a $450 leupold. From there up I like the zeis conquest...but it appears the prices have gone up on those...I had a team realtree 3-9x50 that is basically a camo prostaff...it was nowhere near as clear or bright as the BM 40MM is...I traded it off (lost at least 5 if not 10 shooting minutes in the woods with it's grainy 50mm's vs. BM 40mm!)....(prostaff) more in line with a Burris FFII...good but a little grainy looking with not quite as good color and contrast as the nikon and not as bright as the FFII...the conquest makes em both look bad...I had the Monarch line in 40 and 50mm scopes and it was probably a nickels worth of difference for another $100-150 in price...Leupold VXIII is brighter than all of the above...but the color is nowhere near as good and you lose the crosshairs 5-10 minutes sooner even though it's brighter and you can see 5 minutes later (unless you get the heavy duplex in the VXIII then you are back in business) this comparrison was monarch against VXIII for the money I like the BM I'm ordering a new one for my new .300 winmag with the BDC and gonna check that out on the powerline cut-through and see how it comes out in reallity (reticle vs. actual distances).

for less the $400 you can't beat the Nikon BM line! at $200-220 for the 3-9x40 you can't lose for an all around scope! Save a few more pennies and go up a rung on the Nikon ladder...you'll be glad you did!

Spend another $50 for Buckmaster...

No, don't spend another $50 if you're going to get the Buckmaster, just cough up another $6.95.
For $144.95 shipped, you could get the Buckmaster.

Scopes can be silly cheap on ebay!

I'm not affiliated with, nor do I endorse Ebay.
I just think you should spend your money
wisely, and if that means you get a good
scope from Ebay at a smokin' price, DO IT!!

I'd be warry...that's $10 below wholesale and Nikon does sell factory refurbs without warranty and they do get resold as "new" by some...but you never know....when in doubt check their feedback...I've bought stuff below wholesale before there myself! It usually gets bid up though...I just don't have that kinda time anymore unless it's buy now I usually pass.

edit-wow...that is a buy it now! that's a dang good price...I see it is a refurb...for that kinda doe I don't know that I'd mind...we ordered some of those at the shop a few years back...most of them looked new...some of them had light mounting marks but no gouges or dents...you could just tell they had been mounted...might be worth a gamble and return shipping if you don't like it for that kinda $$$ though...I get mine wholesale anyway so i like the warranty. I did get one 40AO in that lot of refurbs that didn't seem "quite right" to me but eventually sold it off at cost+tax or close to it...the rest of them where fine (think we ordered 6-8 of em through Ellet Bros) I didn't remember them having a 90 day warranty but that would make me OK with it...if it aint bad in a few range sessions it'll likely be GTG anyway with free shipping that makes it like $20 BELOW wholesale on a new one!

The Buckmaster is some nice glass. I'd get that over a Bushnell 4200. The 4200 is nicer than a Prostaff though. Pricewise, the Buckmaster is the way to go.
