Someone told me that in NJ it illegal to have a loaded gun in the house. That all guns must be locked and ammo stored separately from them. My God, is this true?

That's not true, It is illegal to leave a loaded firearm within easy access to a minor.

That leaves alot to argue. What exactly is easy access? I only have one loaded gun in the house, a 12 ga pump locked under the bed in a steel drawer locker.

The key is hanging on a hook hidden nearby. It takes a few seconds to get the gun. But I have little kids, so that will have to do. Is that easy access?

I do carry my .45 at home sometimes. I just have to remember to put it back in the safe before i go out for milk. Of course that is when i'll probably need it.

Basically all NJ laws are so ambiguous, You really can't be sure. Plus many police officers (not all) have no clue as to what is legal and what is not...

Since this thread is about NJ, no doubt it will go downhill fast.

Anyway, what you heard was wrong. It is illegal to leave a loaded firearm within easy access to a minor, though.

All Around Shooter, thanks.

After doing some internet research, I have found what you explained to be the same as what I have found. Good to hear it from a local.

Thank you.
