Hello all,

This is my first post here. Great forum you've got going. I'm happy to finally register.

I have some questions regarding a Saiga 7.62 that I plan on purchasing very soon. As the title suggests I live in the wonderfully liberal state of NJ. This brings me to my questions.

I was referring to a thread that I found through a search that discusses what can be changed or converted on the Saiga here in NJ. This is the thread:

http://www.thehighroad.org/showthread.php?t=348324

Post #14 specifically mentions that you can have "Any 2" of those modifications for it to be legal in NJ.

Does this mean that I can install a pistol grip, FIXED skeleton stock, and a magazine with a higher capacity than 15?

I'm sorry for the newb questions, since they have probably been answered before. I just want to be very clear and positive about these things before I buy the Saiga.

Thanks in advance.

-Joe

Ok, so further research tells me anything more than a 15 round magazine is illegal...regardless of the other parts, correct?

I would be perfectly happy with just the stock and pistol grip.

But, is it possible to have the AK front end conversion to be legal as well?

You are right, no magazines over 15 rounds. Still upsets me because I can only get 10 round magazines for the AR15 I own.

Yes you are correct here too. Just don't swap out that fixed stock for a folding or adjustable one.

Thanks a lot for the reply, much appreciated.

Another question: What would it take to covert the front end to an AK front end?

Is it legal for me to have aftermarket wooden furniture on the front end?

thanks

Rules for dealing with AK-style rifles in NJ:

The receiver must not be stamped 'AK'-anything

NO magazines over 15 rounds, EVER - regardless of date of manufacture. There is no such thing as "pre-ban" in NJ.

Given that it is a semi-automatic rifle that accepts a detachable mag, you may choose from ONE of the following:
- Folding or collapsible stock
- Pistol grip
- Flash suppressor, or a threaded barrel capable of accepting a flash suppressor
- Bayonet lug
- Grenade launcher (which has a whole 'nother set of issues with it)

You can change any other accessory on the rifle that you like, so long as they don't encompass any of the above features. Changing the fore-end, for example, is perfectly legal. Muzzle brakes, if permanently attached (because you can't have a threaded barrel), are also legal (just make sure it's considered a muzzle brake, and not a flash suppressor).

To Joe Cool: 15-round AR-style magazines available here: http://www.arms-n-ammo.com

What would it take to covert the front end to an AK front end?

The lower hand guard needs a special retainer to use standard AK furniture. Go to forum.saiga-12.com for all conversion details and also legalese. I did a conversion on both the rifle and shotgun. Not that hard. hardest is the bullet guide.

This thread was reported with a suggestion that it be moved to Rifles. Although I can see the logic there, it really is a legal question, so we'll leave it here for now. If it looks like it would be important in Rifles, we'll copy it when it's run its course.

Don Gwinn,

Sorry to get technical in this thread; I should have started another thread in rifles.

On the question of wood furniture, it can be done, and if you get US made furniture, it counts as 3 US parts under 922r. Stock(one part), pistol grip(one part), and the upper and lower handguards together count as one part.
I got a really nice wood set from www.ironwooddesigns.com .
To fit the upper handguard, you will need a new gas tube with a retainer, and the lower handguard needs a bolt on retainer, both of which can be bought at www.dinzagarms.com .
There are people making and selling Saiga style wood handguards that will work without any additional mods, but I don't know the url's offhand.
The Saiga forum has lots of info and helpful folks with a lot of knowledge and sources for stuff for Saiga conversions.

Thanks a lot for the reply, I've been checking out the Saiga forums too...much appreciated.

Would a USA made muzzle brake count for this?

I only plan on adding: Wooden furniture, muzzle brake, and a fixed stock with a pistol grip already attached, or possibly I'll modify the receiver for the grip.

thanks!

-Joe

Not an answer to your question but my reading suggests bayonet lugs, grenade launcher attachments, or collapsable stocks are all no-no's. A grendae launcher attachment is acceptable on a C& R SKS though.

Yeah, I've read similar. I'm honestly not interested in adding any of that, so I should be good. I don't want to go really crazy with mods, except for the few I listed above.

-Joe

Oh geez, I just realized my muzzle brake question was answered earlier. I was being careless, woops.
