I'm 18 and live in NJ and I currently do not own any handguns. I know that someone who is 18 can own a handgun they just cannot purchase one under Federal Law. My only question is this; can a family member lawfully transfer a handgun to me? Can another legal gun owner sell me a handgun like through the newspaper or B/S/T section on the forums? Can I recieve a handgun through inheritance?

NJ's handgun laws are strange and a bit confusing to me. When you turn 21 you can fill out a "permit to purchase" form that you submit to your CLEO and wait for them to sign off on it. After you receive the permit you must purchase a handgun within 90 days or it becomes voided. Is this permit necessarry for any of the above situations?

thanks for any help y'all can provide.

Do not even think of getting a pistol in NJ without the permit from your Local LEO.

So if my father were to pass away (he isn't anytime soon) and leave me in his will, lets say 5 handguns, I would have to get a permit to purchase a pistol for each one? I wouldn't think to need a "Permit to Purchase a Pistol" if I am in fact not buying it.
