What do you do when you are carrying your gun and get to a place that doesn't permit them. I'm not familiar with all the places that post signs saying not to bring them, but i'm sure there are a lot of places that restrict them. The reason I ask is, I am still trying to learn about various concealed weapons, but also, how to carry one without getting into a bind. Obviously the airport is clear, don't bring it, but what if you are going someplace only to realize they don't permit them. In some cases, if it is well concealed, you might get away with it, but in others, what do you do? I never like leaving guns in a vehicle b/c it seems like a high probability of something happening to it.

I slide it under the front seat untill I get back to my truck. I have carried a gun in my truck for 15 years now anyway.

Your choices are to either leave it in your car/truck or take your business someplace where you are welcome.

If you leave it in your vehicle just make sure that there is nothing of any value in sight, most thieves will only target your vehicle to get something of value that is left in sight.

Depends... If it's a place where state law specifically makes it a crime to carry (churches, bars, schools, etc.), I'll either not go there or leave my gun in my car. If it's a place where the worst that can happen is a trespassing charge if they ask me to leave and I refuse (Wal Mart, etc.), I'll carry and hope no one notices.

Here's how I handle it.

-Know the places you absolutely can't carry (Bars, schools, courthouses, etc)
-Practice best concealment with the "stupid" places (malls, parks)

In most of the "stupid" places carrying against their wishes means that you have to leave. BFD, I'd rather have irate management ask me to leave than have a badguy nutjob be the only one with a firearm.

+1 to the "take your business to other, firearm friendly, locations.

This is a serious problem with the health care industry, as guns are almost never allowed on hospital campuses, leaving employees vulnerable. Inconveniently, Hospitals are generally in terrible neighborhoods. It's a wonder that more people don't get attacked.

If a business I don't do business with them.

If it's like the courthouse or in a school building I just leave the gun in the car out of sight.
My vehicles have at least three guns in them 24/7 anyhow.

Anyone know what the laws are regarding this in Florida? Say I enter a costco or something and it says no guns allowed am I breaking the law or just trespassing?

Just those things that detect the RFID chip if your stealing something, otherwise it'd be going off everytime someone had keys or change.

Unless it's somewhere that's illegal for me (bars, courthouses, Iowa), I don't worry about it. If it's not illegal, the worst they can do is kick me out. And in that case, who cares, if they don't need me I don't need them.

I obey the law, of course, but I carry to the full extent that the law allows. It's rarely an issue though, I hardly ever see a sign.

First off I consider it poor practice to leave a gun unlocked in a car. A vehicle is inherently less secure than a home. Providing a thief with your gun is precisely the opposite of most folks reason to carry in the first place. Buy a quick opening gun safe and chain it to your car's interior. Mine was less than $150.00 and has a spring loaded lid to speed things up. At a bare minimum bolt a toolbox to your trunk and padlock your gun in it. Just FYI there are some DeSantis holsters made for LEO's that feature a slot cut in them to allow handcuffs to lock the gun into the holster. You could buy a set of handcuffs for $35.00 which coupled with the holster would render a superior solution to just dumping it under the seat.

Just trespassing if you are caught and don't leave when asked. In Florida, if a business posts a policy about no weapons/firearms on site and you carry anyway and are found out, the most they can do is ask you to leave. If you then refuse to leave you can be popped with armed trespass. Unlike, Texas for example, where a 30-06 sign makes the policy law.

As a rule, I don't go places where carry is banned if I can avoid it.

When I go to vote, for instance (carry is banned in polling places) I'll just lock it in a strongbox in the trunk.

Safe box

I have a few safe/security boxes for handguns.

The best deal by far was a small, thin, flat, rectangular, (black) metal box with a key lock for about $30. It came with a high-strength cable (like a bike lock cable) that fit in slot in the box; this enables securing the box to vehicle seat frame. It easily fits under any vehicle seat and is not visible. Bought it on eBay, but have seen them in a few gun stores (e.g. Sportsman's Warehouse) also.

So now when I go into a place that is posted or prohibited by local CHL (concealed carry permit) laws, I just put the carry gun in the safe box which is always under the seat. (Sometimes if it is a place that is posted but otherwise legal, I might also just ignore it and take my chances - my CCW holsters make the carry gun almost invisible).

in Nevada you walk right on by them, federal buildings, schools, and airports, only places you cant carry here.

Same as above except for the airport. I always carry in the airport if I'm picking up or dropping off. They aren't going to let me past security anyway, and that's the only part of the airport it's not legal.

Private businesses can post whatever they want, it's not illegal (here in WA) to ignore them, nor are you trespassing if you do. You are only trespassing if you are told (for ANY reason) to leave and you do not.

Even the airport isn't crystal clear. A couple of years ago, I was picking someone up at SL Intl, and I called their security desk to ask them what the rules were. They told me, "As long as you're outside the search area, you can carry." So I get there, and there's the big red sign at the terminal door, banning all carry on premises. I rolled my eyes and put it back in my car. It just seems that if there are different carry rules for different areas of the airport, they should post the appropriate areas.

I didn't need to argue about a difference of opinion between security people, when they couldn't even agree on which area is which or where the sign should be posted.

texas law...

hey, billy h or someone else...

i haven't got my CHL yet, but plan to soon. i'm interested in what you said earlier. it was my plan to ignore signs unless they were a clear prohibition [courthouse, bar, school, etc]. are you saying that a sign makes it law and a potential crime for just a regular business?

thanks in advance for any info. hoping to get certified as soon as i purchase an appropriately concealable weapon.

I'm with denfoote.
I carry everywhere - except airports (metal detectors). I carry at work even though I'm not allowed. I'd rather take my chances on being caught than being unarmed in a bad situation. Concealed means concealed :D
