No mention of gun control in SOU speech

The President did not bring up gun control in his State of the Union speech this evening. Apparently that will be addressed at another time.

The antis are upset but the President seems to have had more important things to say.

This is not to say the President isn't in favor of banning "assault weapons" but Mr. Obama seemed to have wanted to appeal to the Republicans as much as possible tonight and he's too smart a politician not to know that, even with the tragedy in Tucson, the nation (and more important, the Republican majority in the House) are not in favor of new controls on firearms.

Speaking of the tragedy in Tucson, prosecutors in Japan want Tomohiro Kato to hang for his crimes. Kato killed seven people and wounded ten others in Tokyo. He used a rented truck to run down and kill three people and used a dagger to stab 14 more, four of whom died. He also tried to stab a police officer but the officer was protected by his vest.

Just goes to show it doesn't take a Glock when a loon gets loose.

I hope all the rumor queens on this site and others are satisfied and will have no more talk of magazine or gun bans until an actual bill is presented. I hate the hysteria caused by speculation and the gun community rumor mill should be ashamed of itself as usual.

someday I (and others) will ignore your blathering, because you've cried "WOLF!!!1!1!!" too many times. My panic muscle is all worn out, because some people can't resist posting every piece of crap that gets into their inbox.

And TexasBill is right, you can do far more damage with a vehicle than can be done with a handgun.

Exactly, the bill must get out of the House Judiciary Committee. Since my Republican Congressman sits on that committee I have contacted him to voice my hope that it does not leave his committee. At this point unless your congressman is on that committee, no reason to do to much at this point.

Now the Senate committe will be a harder place to put on the breaks but plenty of "moderate" Democrats in that body that may or may not be interested in such a measure.

I too tire of the fearmongering, but also appreciate being kept up to date.....you know "keep your enemies close" and all......

However, the extremity and overambitious attitude in which some in the shooting community relay such news could use an overhaul. I'd much rather have a single post stating somehting along the lines of

"HR bill 45 was introduced to committee today. This draconian anti-gun measure, however, has zero co-sponsors and is in no danger of becoming law anytime soon. However, you should be aware that its out there,and that anti-gun legislation continues to be introduced, no matter how miniscule the odds of itpassing may be."

Instead, what we often get is

OMG!! Its HAPPENING.....they are finally gonna do it!!! Buy them while you can, and bury them deep...they're coming for YOU AND YOUR GUNS!!! If we wait til a bill is in committee, we have waited too long. Our legislators need CONSTANT reminding not to propose gun control. I feel many people here are sticking their heads in the sand on this issue. I lived through the AWB and used Glock mags for $100 was an unpleasant experience that I do not want to repeat.

Yes we should legislatively remain vigilant but the speculation must end if for nothing else my wallet! I hate how the internet rumor BS drives up the prices and availability for my hobby.

Yes they did. Obama signed the legislation that now ALLOWS one to carry in national parks.

However, I disagree with the majority opinion here. I think if the liberals will stick to just high capacity magazines, and not try to ban guns at the same time, that they may be able to succeed, especially if there is another high profile murder involving these magazine. In a recent TV interview, even Dick Cheney said he thought banning high capacity mags was something to consider.

Likely, they will add a magazine restriction as an amendment to some other bill the Republicans want to pass, in an effort to get enough Democrat votes in the Senate.

Where did I say that? I have all the mags I want for the guns I own. But thanks to the sky is falling folks mag prices have temporarily spiked, so if I get a new gun and want additional mags for it I have to pay for speculation based on nothing but speculation. We do it to ourselves. The gun community is it's own worst enemy.

All I am saying is that screaming that the high cap mags will dry up and that you better go buy 'em now while you can is going to do nothing productive. What it will do is drive prices up and decrease supplies. Supply and demand simple as that.

Just because Obama wasn't foolish enough to mention it during his state of the union speech, doesn't mean he doesn't have anything planned. I don't like unnecessary worrying, but we still need to stay on top of things. These people pass legislation in the dead of night, under the cover of some other sensational event. If we get wind of any kind of gun legislation we need to preemptively contact our representatives. That is the best way, besides electing pro 2nd amendment guys, we can stop more ludicrous gun control. We have got to stay on top of these guys, they are prone to deceit and conflict with the will of the people.

As of the current congress (according to Dave Kopel) there are 50 NRA 'A' rated Senators and 262 'A' rated Congressmen. In addition to that there are 2 'B' rated Senators as well as 11 'B' rated congresscritters.

I take that to mean that any attempts at second amendment restrictions via the legislative branch of government are dead until at least 2013. Regulation via the judicial branch or the bureaucracy is still a possibility.

So IMHO while one should not be complacent I see no need to panic.
