Howdy folks. I didn't get promoted, but because of my time in service I got a pay raise of about $100 a month. How should I celebrate?

I live in PRK and I will be leaving for Iraq in the middle of October. I'm using my deployment perk$ to get myself a good varmint rifle, HD shotgun and a 10/22 (along with something to turn heads at the range). I have 5 months after I get back to get myself a hunting rifle. I have a handgun that I'm very happy with but I want to celebrate next month with a cheap gun that's not a Mosin Nagant. This gun doesn't have to be practical, it just have to put rounds down range. It can be a handgun (pistol or revolver) a rifle or a shotgun (no black powder). I'm leaning towards a .22 LR single action wheel gun, BUT MY OPTIONS ARE WIDE OPEN. What would you choose. My budget is 300-350 and I'd prefer to buy NIB but a used one would be good too.

It's hard to go wrong with a Ruger Single Six. You can shoot all day and still have money left.

Mosin's are fun too. Ammo is cheap and makes an impressive boom and fireball.

Ditto the Ruger Single Six -- a great plinker/trainer!

A clean, used Security Six or K-frame Smith would do too. .38 Spcl is easy to reload/cheap to shoot.

Here's a personal request: do try to return from The Sandbox with all of your original parts, including your skin. My son was SUPPOSED to just maintain his AAV7 but did way too much house clearing for his own good and eventually spent two years at Brooke Medical Center. I know that you just wrench those floppy-wing things but try not to volunteer too often. I helped bury an MH-53 crew chief. I've done enough of that for this incarnation. . . . :(

def4pos8, I'll do my best to come home with everything. I'll have 2 little girls and my lovely lady waiting for me. I just have to remember that I have to do my duty as a Marine, a dad, and a husband (which is a tough job). Unless a Helo goes down, I won't be required to go outside the wire.

Well darn. My wife handles my finances and she vetoed the gun purchase. It's okay though. She said I can use add this gun to my deployment perks$.

I'm assuming you have some of the comfort stuff you need for the sandbox.

Gun? I'd say the most fun one is the .22lr if you don't have one. If you're limiting yourself to single action the choices are slim in that price range. I think the costs have increased due to cowboy action shooting. The .22lr .22WMR convertibles make me want to spend money I can't afford right now.

Other fun stuff:
I'd recommend getting a portable harddrive and stuffing books on it.
These folk give out whole novels for free, they are of course wanting you to buy the rest but they also have given an immense number of them free to the military. http://www.baen.com/library/ Sadly Mr. Baen has passed on but it's still run by good people. It's science fiction with a lot of it geared to military science fiction.

More free books can be found here

I filled up a six gig external harddrive (the small ones) with books and gave it to a soldier who is a friends husband. If you like music that's one way to carry a *lot* more than most iPods hold.
