(There has been a LOT of these lately. There was another one just a few blocks from where I work yesterday. Always have a plan!)

NOPD officer, wife shot in home by would-be robbers

A veteran New Orleans police detective was in critical condition Saturday after he was shot by two gunmen who forced their way into his eastern New Orleans home during an early morning robbery attempt, police said.

Detective Thelonious Dukes, 47, was shot in the leg and lower torso, and his wife was shot in the foot, said Sgt. Joe Narcisse, a spokesman for the New Orleans Police Department.

Dukes, a recipient of several medals of valor and commendation during his 19-year NOPD career, was parking his truck in the driveway of his home in the 100 block of Kristen Court, off Bullard Avenue, just before 3 a.m. when two men walked up and forced him at gunpoint inside his house, where his wife was asleep.

Once inside, the suspects demanded money, Narcisse said. Dukes grabbed a gun and exchanged fire with the intruders, who fled, he said.

It was not clear whether the gunmen, who remained at large Saturday night, were injured.

Paramedics took Dukes and his wife to University Hospital, said Jeb Tate, a spokesman for New Orleans Emergency Medical Services. Dukes' wife, whose name was not available Saturday, was in stable condition, he said.

Detectives are looking for three "people of interest," Narcisse said.

One of those wanted for questioning is 23-year-old Cinque "Q" Melancon, Narcisse said. Melancon is 6 feet 2 inches tall and weighs about 175 pounds.

Narcisse said police were also looking for two other men identified only as "Vernon" and "Li'l June."

In recent weeks, eastern New Orleans has become a hotbed of violence, with many high-profile multiple shootings stemming from home invasions or armed robberies.

At least 12 people have been shot dead and at least 11 others have been wounded in the largely unpopulated section of the city since the beginning of August.

On Monday night, three people were shot on Savoie Court, a cul-de-sac in the Village de l'Est neighborhood. The shooting was the third apparent home invasion on the street in the past two months.

On Aug. 24, three people were fatally shot in the 4800 block of Savoie Court. Gunmen confronted seven people sitting under a carport, forced them into a house, and robbed and shot them. Two weeks earlier, a husband and wife were found slain inside their house in the largely Vietnamese neighborhood, which is about two miles from the Dukes home.

With the rash of robberies and shootings a growing cause of concern for residents and laborers rebuilding homes in eastern New Orleans, Police Superintendent Warren Riley announced after the Aug. 11 killings that he would send additional officers -- members of a plainclothes strike force -- to bolster staffing in the 7th District.

That district, which covers eastern New Orleans, boasts the largest patrol area but ranks second-lowest in staff among the city's eight police districts.

Anyone with information is asked to call Crimestoppers at (504) 821-2222. A reward of $5,000 will be paid to anyone with information leading to the arrest and indictment of the persons responsible for this crime. You do not have to leave your name to receive the award. Sgt. Daniel McMullen is the lead investigator.

How do you sat "Cesspool" in French ? If I were religious, I'd say that GoD don't want NOLA rebuilt. I really feel for those decent people who can't get out.
