Northern Illinois University Shooting

My thoughts are with the victims and their families.

I am a former resident of IL.

A big reason I moved is because of their gun laws.

Illinois is trying to pass a nasty ammunition law right now. Bad timing. Daley will have a field day. <arghhh>

It seems like it's not going to end. These shootings are popping up at a rate of 1 per week and it's getting completely out of hand.:banghead:

It's painfully obvious that the government can't protect us even one of of it's own gun free zones.

Hopefully not too many are wounded or killed in this latest act of senseless violence.

my wife called and said that the wounded were taken to a local hospital. she said news reports indicated several wounded persons were in the process of being helicoptered to Rockford.

one girl is in surgery at the local hospital. it might be a lack of neurosurgeons there led them to send other casualties to Rockford. Just speculation.

13 patients have arrived.

More details will be available shortly.

Call the schools, call the school security, call the campus and city newspapers and media...
I think it is best for now if we just pray. There is nothing productive that will come from making political hay out of such a situation.

We need to start pushing at the folks... Call the schools, call the school security, call the campus and city newspapers and media...

It would be in extremely poor taste to start any sort of campaign on the heels of an event like this.

Maybe once all the victims are in stable condition, and discharged, we could think about it, but for now, as someone else said, all you can really do is pray and hope for the best for those injured.

Thankfully, it appears the shooter used an incredibly weak shot load, perhaps birdshot. According to the news, he shot at least thirteen people in the head with a shotgun and there are no reported deaths.

You know the Brady Campaign is going to play this for all it's worth.

You know the Brady Campaign is going to play this for all it's worth.

Let them take the low-road and the first swing.

If we come out first we're just "crazy gun nuts politicizing a tragedy." We can refute any of their arguments with hard facts. We've done it before and we're going to have to keep doing it.

Really, for IL any victory for "our side" must start at the state level, getting IL to pass CCW legislation. And that is highly unlikely.

Well, good luck getting that done in IL, you know Obama has said he supports a NATIONAL BAN ON CCW. God help us if he gets elected on a national level, but you can see how IL has the laws that they do, if he's the type of politician elected there. I hope there can be progress made in IL, and around the country, on CCW laws, and where you can legally carry. We can get CCW down here, but still can't carry at schools, or a whole host of other places.

Guy, you know that Brady, etc., is already calling the media. It's time that we, at a grass roots level, get involved. If a TV station gets 2 calls from Brady, and 100 from "Hey, why isn't my kid safe" parents, who do you think is going to get the air time?

We're in a war about our safety, folks.

maybe Britney will do us a favor

and go back to the psych ward 5150, that will get this off the news quick.

I think we need to strike hard and fast on these occasions
if we do not speak up at the time we will never be heard because the media is on the gun control freak side.

We need to get CCW passed and we need to allow students to carry on college campuses nationwide.

I agree with his and many other posts that we need to allow responsible persons to protect themselves by doing away with gun-free zones. I recently started carrying (most of the time). I know I need more training and information.

So...I ask the following question (and if this is not the appropriate thread, I apologize):

What can a responsible armed citizen DO in the face of such a senseless attack? How would you make a difference with your pocket pistol against a well-armed madman in a crowded lecture hall (or mall, or church, etc)? You may end up heroically dead, or worse, you may injure other innocents. What is the proper response in such a situation?

Two of my kids are there. Both accounted for. (Whew). One is a student -- asleep in his apartment while all the excitement was going on. The other is a grad student, only seldom on campus.

Lone nut gunmen are sure coming out of the woodwork lately, verdad?

Charl van Wyk drove off a SWAPO team with his S&W J-frame popgun.

rainbow,

The answer is training. With training you will realize that you should not be carrying a pistol in your pocket. With training you will learn to react to a threat. With training you will learn to manipulate your weapon under stress and to move to cover as you fight and to minimize the harm to bystanders.

The proper response: front sight, press.

I am willing to go to any university to demonstrate the proper response (we will do it with sims).

A LOT. Shot placement and cover could win the day for the good guys.

An armed citizen can take the guy out. My "pocket pistol" is a full size .45 that goes with me everywhere...and I know how to use it. The proper response is to drop the dude in his tracks.
