My niece used to attend NIU until this current semester when she transfered to a different school.

She said there was some kind of threat there just before Christmas, something that was written on some bathroom stall walls.

Yep. Yet another shooting in a gun free zone. But then this entire state is one gigantic gun free zone.

This hits really, really close to home. NIU is only 45 mins away, and I considered going to school there; I have aquaintances who study there. Ilbob is right, there were death threats placed in a restroom in December.

DEKALB, Ill. - A gunman opened fire Thursday in a lecture hall on the campus of Northern Illinois University, and more than a dozen people were reported injured. Police sources told NBC affiliate WMAQ of Chicago that the shooter may have taken his own life.

Ambulances and fire trucks raced to the scene of the shooting at Kohl Hall after the shooting, which occurred about 4 p.m. ET, the university said in a posting on its Web site.

A spokesman at Kishwaukee Community Hospital in DeKalb told NBC News that area hospitals had been told “to expect up to 15 injured people from the campus.”

The university issued an alert at 4:20 p.m. ET telling students to avoid Kings Common and buildings in that area. The university was locked down, and students reportedly were calling from the library.

“We can’t leave the dorm. We can’t go outside,” a student named Jasmine told WMAQ. “The doors are locked.”

What is it with the increased shootings preceding presidential elections? Am I imagining this or do stats back me up?

Ok tin-foil rant off. This sucks on so many different levels. My heart goes out to the students and their families. I am, like you all, awaiting details. CNN says 18 shot, no confirmed deaths. At least 4 - 5 head wounds.

God help us all...

The reports are saying the shooter used a shotgun. At least three dead, one of them being the shooter.

This is screwed up. I have a lot of friends at NIU. I am tired of this state. All these recent high profile shootings cannot be good for IL gunowners. We need to get CCW passed and we need to allow students to carry on college campuses nationwide.

there have been 2 serious assaults this semester at my university. Something needs to be done about schools in general. I'm furious I am worried to go and learn. Thoughts and prayers with everyone on this sad day...

People of Illinois:

Have you had enough of Government Mandated Victim-hood?

You have an opportunity here to make a CHANGE!

YOU can demand an end to Victim Disarmament Zones!

People of Illinois, YOU NEED TO MAKE THIS CHANGE HAPPEN!

Don't let the anti's rev up the same old tired rhetoric. Take the initiative and point out the obvious to your State representatives!

Or back up, soil yourselves, be good little sheep.......and await the next slaughter. After all it is an election year. Maybe the candidate du jour will make you feel safe.

thoughts and prayers are with the families and friends.

and we need to get CCW on campuses. I will be wearing my empty holster to class in april.

Just sickening. I feel so bad for these kids that just want to learn and get ahead in life. It is a very sad day.

Prayers to the families of the victims.

:(

El Tejon - LOL, best quote ever.

Another great day for Gun Control. I hope Obama uses this as a selling point for his campaign! See what great things come from the laws of his state.

I live about 8 miles from NIU and I went there 88-92 for Computer Science. This was in Cole Hall. Cole Hall only has two very large rooms, 100 and 101, each of which hold 300+ students and are used for very large classes. I had FORTRAN and Trigonometry in Cole Hall. The Tribune reports that this was a geology class, which is consistent with the class types they teach there (probably the introductory class).

I hope no one was killed except the gunman.

I called an friend who was attending today. She said shooter was down, NO fatalities, despite what the news reports are saying. Most of the injured were from broken glass/ secondary projectiles.

Getting a CCW law isn't going to help unless you ban pre-emption. Banning pre-emption by colleges isn't going to help unless you also forbid them from "academic discipline."

I went to Virginia Tech. Anyone in the world who has a CHP, except students, can legally carry on campus (although they'll ask you to leave if they find out). If a student carries, though, they're not under criminal sanction: they're under academic sanction and face expulsion. It's a nifty way of skirting the law.
