Northern Tool has Red Ryders

Wow, in NJ those things are regulated the same way as firearms and considered the same on paper.

So a Barret .50 or a Red Ryder BB hold the same status in NJ law.

I hope they're still made well.
When I was a kid I had a Daisy Model 880. It had a metal receiver, metal barrel(shroud), and a quality synthetic stock. My brother had one with a wood stock.

I bought one a while back to take care of some pests inside city limits. It was the biggest pile of crap I've ever seen. It weighed half as much as my old one, there was almost NO metal anywhere, the stock wobbled against the receiver, it was completely inaccurate...it felt worse than those cheap cap guns they used to sell.

I took it back and got a Benjamin Sheridan which was much better, but still not as nice as the older ones.

For about $60 you can actually get airguns powerful enough to take small pests from large rats to squirrels.
Or put holes in a kid's toy from 20 yards.
You can get the models that go over 700-800 fps with a BB.

Of course the low risk to almost anything other than an eye from the red ryder may be just the reason you want it.

Two are going to small kids and one is for me for nostalgia purposes :)
The other is going to my Father in Law for the same reason

Yeah, these are good for pegging stray dogs or other animals that you don't intend to penetrate.
It's good to have one around for that, and also a REAL air rifle for the work Zoogster mentioned.

I remember mine. I could shoot the cap off a two liter from 75 feet. Unfortunately, no one ever told me how to zero sights (did they even have adjustable sights?) so I became a master of Kentucky windage.

Dang. As if I needed another reason not to live in NJ....:what:

Mine was a early 80s Red Ryder....the recievers on the current ones look like crap now (the fit isn't there, and the bluing is more black than a nice deep blue), and the levers aren't as well made. Not sure about the rest. the rear sight on mine was adjustable, but I think it was just elevation.

Now I'm wanting to find an older one in good shape....darn you guys, my projectile launcher acquisition syndrome is kicking in again.

Are the Red Ryders still being made? How do they differ from the ones from the 1950s (or whenever they came out)?
Yes there still being made today, I think the modern ones have a lot more plastic parts. Idk I wasn't around when they came out back then.

Give me a break guys, for $28 you don't expect it to be built like a Holland and Holland do you???

I am sure you will notice quite a difference between the one you had then and these new ones.

I guess you can say that...My Red Ryder cost a lot more than $28, and once you count for inflation, it really cost a whole lot more than that.

I just miss the days they were made in Rogers AR :(

I bought a couple of Red Ryders to give away at our last NWTF Banquet. When I picked them up, I actually stopped to look inside the boxes to make sure they were in there, they were so light! My friend had one when we were kids and it weighed three or four times what the new ones do. Speaking of BB guns, I had a Daisy Golden Eagle, circa 1959, among others. I wonder what that gun would be worth today!

I am curious to see where they are made and what they are made of/like. I will post bb gun porn once I get them. I am hoping they are still made here.
As for the weight, you have to remember that when you were a kid they weighed a lot more and were a lot bigger to you as well. I figure if they last a few years my nephews will have a lot of fun with them and maybe by then be into a .22 or two :D

I thought Red Ryders were something like $20 or $25 at WalMart.
I bought my nephew one about two years ago and I swear I thought I paid $20 for it.

Red Riders aren't the $10-$12 BB guns of old. I bought one a couple months ago for about $40. Seems like a good fair price. I probably paid retail for mine, but I only knew one place that actually had them unless I used mail order.

I've got one from my grandfather he bought used in '49. It needs another leather thong on it, other than that it works like new and really throws a BB.

I did kill many a bear and injun with that gun as a youngster.
X
