Not again.......! Feral Hog Control in East Texas

I have seen one of the you tube guys hunting hogs in Texas with a air rifle. Can't remember his name, I quit watching him because of all the commercials. He is a good shot, and would shoot them behind the ear and they would fall right over.

Have a blessed day,

Leon

Keith Warren. He usually hunts inside of crossbow range.

String broke. :(

After getting a group earlier this week, I got surprised by another coming in this evening.

Gave the trap a call to drop the gates and the drive gate (behind the camera) fell but the connection to the rear gate broke and they ran out, only to leave a coon to clean up after them. B322B3EB-67E3-43E3-A3C5-5038FAC05210.jpeg

Cable now, and I knew better before today....

Almost dropped the gates on this group last night but I have a group of buddies coming down tomorrow.

Hope you get them.

I've been trying to catch up with a Lone Boar the last couple of weeks. NO pattern at all, shows up all times of the night.

So hot here lately I haven't been getting on stand until well after dark. Walked in on him last night just at dark and spooked him away, wouldn't you know it. Game camera shows he came back about 1:00 a.m.

I'll get him sooner or later. Good luck with yours.

Hah, wouldn't you know it. Thought about going to sit on stand last night....but I'd been working on my vehicle most of the day and it was mighty hot out.

So...I decided I'd just wait another day or two. Pulled the card from the game camera this morning and of course the Boar had come in early yesterday evening (just after dark). I wouldn't have had to of waited long at all IF I had gone. It's almost like they KNOW when to come out and when not to. :(

This isn't a big boar but definitely breeding age and needs to be taken out of the gene 'pool' as soon as possible. This guy is easy to identify because he sports an unusually bushy tail....almost like a squirrel.

Very cautious and spooky. Every series of videos I have of him has him running out the frame over any little sound. He comes back....but I'll have to be very quiet because the stand I am sitting on is a scant 20 yds. from the bait site. I'll use my shotgun again on this stand, provided I get a chance at him. Maybe go this evening.

This is 'Squirrel Tail':

Well, I didn’t get any in the trap last night and I didn’t get my new trap panels done either but the spot I picked out, looks like it’s going to be a winner. Right now it’s only 16x16 but it’s going to be 12, 8ft panels & two gates that are a bit bigger than the openings they are now used to going through.

Hope you get a shot at him Flint, don't miss.

Have a blessed day,

Leon

Too hot yesterday to go. And what little wind we had was swirling. So plan on going this evening. Steady wind direction today.

Looks like the hog went to a pond I have about 300 yds. away from the stand site and cooled off before coming into the bait. You can see where he is wet about 1/2 way up. Will probably do the same thing this evening.

Hopefully get a chance at him tonight depending on which direction he comes from (not consistent) and might wind me first.

Hogs win again. :(

Got on stand yesterday evening at 8:00 pm expecting the boar I've been after to show up anytime between dark and 10:00 pm.

That last time I sat that stand the mosquitoes were not bad at all. This time they made up for it. In an effort to keep cool I had dressed in shorts and a light weight, short sleeve shirt. Yeah....I know.

I DID stay cool but the mosquitoes feasted on my legs and uncovered arms. After about an hour or so....I guess they had all gotten their fill because they left. Miserable (but cool) I continued to watch the lighted bait site and listen for anything stirring in the woods behind me. At this point only a couple of raccoons had shown up...which was good because they make excellent sentry's.

Twice they stood up, alerted in one direction and ran off in the other, but nothing ever appeared. After the second time, they didn't come back. No worry, I just kept watching and listening. After 3 hours on stand (11:00 pm)....I'd had enough and quietly got down, turned off the hog light and walked back to my vehicle.

Checked the game camera this morning and seems I missed my hog by 25 minutes. Hog hunting can be cruel at times.

Later on...a group of smaller pigs visited as well, but I would not have been on stand that late....so nothing missed there.

We will see if the group of pigs comes back or not. If they do then I'll have to make up my mind to load the shotgun with Dixie Tri-Ball (to shoot through several pigs) or stay with 3" magnum 00 buck for the lone boar. Then hope the right pig(s) show up for the load I have chambered.

Or...I could just set up a trap down there and dispense with all this chasing after them.

I was welding up the panels for the new trap when the camera in the old one started going off. I called my buddy to see if he was up for taking them out, he confirmed, so I dropped the gates.

Need to mount the camera outside the trap so they can’t knock it around.

At that point they walk in circles to find an exit, that doesn’t exist.

Before they start getting “sleepy” it’s a whipping to drag them to the gates then out, he’s getting good at running them to one end or the other before putting them down.

The trap I hope to be finished with by Thursday will be drive through after the put down.

I shot a 100 Lb sow Tuesday morning. I cut off the leg quarters and back straps, and cut the belly open to make it easier for scavengers.

I dropped off the carcass at 8:30AM Tuesday morning. The photo here was taken six hours later at 2:30PM.

That agrees with what happens to the carcasses here as well. The buzzards and coyotes will strip them to the bone in less than 24 hrs. Then the coyotes come back and eat the rib bones first...then carry off the leg and shoulder bones. Except for the skull, hide and vertebrae scattered around, you wouldn't know there was ever a hog there. Even the hooves are eaten.

Went extra early yesterday evening to sit on stand. Hadn't been there 15 minutes when I could see the tops of some saplings moving in the dense brush to my left and slightly downhill. The direction of travel quartering slightly to me. At one point (about 35 yds. away) I could see a Black Hog for just a few steps and then couldn't see it again because of the thick cover.

I had hoped it would turn and come up a trail that is there that leads to the bait site....but instead it headed in a different direction which put it downhill and behind me. I never heard it slip away, but undoubtedly it got my wind/scent and left. Pretty sure it was the boar I've been after and apparently he is circling the area and 'scent checking' before he decides to come in or not.

Knowing I'd been busted....I left about an hour after dark. Game camera shows the boar came in a couple of hours after I left and entered the area from right behind my stand.

So...I may need to move back to the second stand I have set up there....that is 95 yds. away and well uphill. Just snipe this guy with my rifle instead of going at it with the shotgun at 20 yds. Otherwise this game is going to keep playing out as it did yesterday until the boar decides to move on.

Well finished the new trap this evening. Did a test run of putting it up, took 22 min and then about 26 min to load it up, think I’m just going to lay it down next time if I am by myself and I didn’t drive in the stakes

Should have it online for Sat evening.

Very nice. Might build something similar myself. I like to the smaller 4" x 4" utility panels though...because piglets always manage to squirt out the bottom squares otherwise.

That's a great set up. Looking forward to seeing you trap some more.

Buck Fawns I'd wager. Nothing with a more curious nature out in the woods....until they are about a year old.
Hey hope you and the missus are doing ok. Looks like you’re getting hammered by Laura. Give us an update when you can. Prayers sent to all of you down there and in Louisiana. This is going to be a devastating storm.
