I understand the requirements and it looks like I'm all set on that.

I've always been a WWII buff, and while not so much now, I find myself wanted to get a garand before they disappear. While I know that springfield makes a garand, there's just something about owning a piece of history.

With that I'm was originally considering picking up a rack grade and shooting a few rounds through it and then sending it to my smith to have it rebarreled to .308. Anyone that has done this I'd be interested in how much this ran you abouts.

But lately I've considered picking up a service grade and keeping it completely original, and maybe also picking up a rack grade for the conversion. I get the feeling that the service grade would probably spend more time in the safe, and the rack grade conversion would spent much more time at the range. This is my ideal situation, but I have to say I'm fairly split, I'm somewhat leaning towards just getting the rack grade.

But with that, how has everyone's results been with cmp lately? I've ran a few searches and I've seen some very nice rifles, but I was hoping for something fairly recent.

I got a Greek HRA Service Grade last spring. It was in great condition. The wood was a little beat up, but it was in good shape. Accurate also.

I don't think you will regret getting a service grade. Also, I hear the Greek ammo they sell is pretty good and comes in the 8 round clips and bandoliers.

I have been considering getting a rack grade for the purpose of spare parts and maybe getting it rebarreled and fixed up real nice in the future.

I am not sure what the wait is for service grades right now or what manufacturers they have left, but a service grade will last you a while.

On Conversions: If you do a search for Garand on this forum, there are a few threads covering that subject. There is a guy named Warbird that does it. Someone around here has the contact info on his sig line.
