I havent been an NRA member for years, and just getting back into guns....I know alot of local guys around that DONT believe in the NRA methods or mission, but I am a fence sitter at this point...

Whatchoo think??

Everyone who owns a gun should join the NRA. Some of their tactics are annoying, but they do more for 2nd ammendment rights that anyone. If you don't want to join them, then join another gun rights group. And don't forget to vote!

First, join the NRA. Then, if you don't feel that they advocate sufficiently for you, join other groups as you wish.

Some people may not like the particular tactics employed by the NRA. However, they are the #1 organization which gets the Anti's shorts in a bunch... and that's a good thing.

Every US Gun Owner Should Support the NRA

People can quibble with some of the NRA's moves over the years - there are some legitimate goofs to criticize. And there are a few gun rights organizations out there that are more "ideologically pure" or more "hard line" than the NRA.

But, over the past 50+ years, no organization has done as much for gun owner rights in the US than the NRA. It is the biggest, strongest, most effective gun rights organization out there. The gun-ban goofballs are constantly complaining about the power and influence of the NRA, and for good reason.

The NRA also sets standards, sponsors competitions, and certifies instructors and classes, and has hundreds of other programs/activities that are invaluable for gun owners.

My take: every US gun owner should support the NRA.

If there is another organization out there that serves some niche interest of yours, or has a stronger position that you like better than the NRA, then by all means support them too.

But whatever you do, do support the NRA.

I do consider them soft on some issues....
But they are the big dog on the block, and while they may not be the most agressive dog on the block, the are the biggest..

That and they scare the begeepers out of the liberal pansy bottoms, and that makes me smile a little.. :)

I just renewed my membership.

They screw stuff up a lot and tend to compromise unfortunately, but they are still a powerful pro-gun force in politics. Ask anyone on the street, anywhere in the U.S., who the NRA is and they will know. People have wildly varying opinions about them, but that just depends on their particular 2nd amendment stance.

Try asking somebody on the street who the GOA is. "Who?"

Forbes Magazine declared the NRA

THE most effective lobby in Washington. What else do you need to know?

"I know alot of local guys around that DONT believe in the NRA methods or mission..."

Don't tell me, let me guess. Your "local guys" are:

1. Hunters;

2. Too cheap to defend their rights; or

3. Both.

Leeches on the body politic, whichever it is. :barf:

Run some searches on the nra.

Vin suprynowicz, I forget how to spell his last name, has a few books out that I just read.

In one he talks about how some locals in a state were working to get some legislation passed that would not restrict out of state ccw folks when they came to visit.

An nra rep came in and got a law passed, but it had a 60 day limit to it.

The locals did not ask the nra to come in and help and in my opinion this was about politics or worse.

I will see if I can get my book back tomorrow so I can post specifics about the above.

There is lots to read on the nra-ila website as well.

Overall the nra is currently working to make many things better than they are right now, in my opinion.

However, after reading much of the information on the nra and nra-ila sight I have come to the conclusion that they have helped write much gun control legislation and they are for restrictions that I disagree with.

So I have to decide if it is better to help them help me for a bit and I mostly have to decide if that will hurt me in the future or not.

Some searches on the net turn up a lot of information, both good and bad, about the nra.

So I would research anything specific your friends or whatever have mentioned so you can decide which side of the fence you wish to be on.

They're not perfect, but, what is in life?
You can always join GOA as well as state and or locals groups.
Stay a member long enough and vote in the Board of Directors election to try
to change it to your liking.
But join the NRA.

If not them then another similar organization

I know a lot of people are cheesed off at them, but they are effective and the more money they raise the better. If they don't do it for you try one of the smaller organizations.

I'm a Life Member. My son is a Life Member. My wife is a member. My daughter is a member. I also support the Second Amendment Foundation and GOA, but the NRA is always in the vanguard. Every gun owner should be a member, because the VPC is not just comin' for those evil black guns. They want 'em all.

I'm a Patron Life Member - I was at Cincinnati

Personally I'd reverse the order - get active locally first - support your local dealers, support your local community when it comes to both collectors and hunters, write and show up for hearings as urban sprawl drives ranges out of business - if you don't have a local range start one. Then be active in State associations including talk politely to your state legislators face to face however anti-gun they might be. Offer to work a membership table at local gunshows and you might get your admission comped.

Finally join the national associations and to the extent you think the NRA should do something different let them know - with the full power of your local and state association behind you.

If you can't do all that then do send join and send what money you can spare.

The NRA and the ILA are actually different, when you join the NRA all the political stuff will come from the ILA which is the legislative arm of the NRA (Institute for Legislative Action) and that is where all the request for donations for legislation support comes from. Some people get upset about this but it is the biggest hammer we have. So definitely join the NRA. I am a life member since 1961 and believe that if it weren't for the NRA we would not have guns today.

Yes, Life member

Yes it is a simple matter of number's. The NRA is the 800 gorilla so let's make it the 1200 pound gorilla. To congress it is about number's and they look hard at the NRA's number's. I think it is best if all gun owner's are represented by a blanket organazation ,that is all of us are counted as one. Good or bad that group for gun owner's is the NRA. I would like to say at time's they may have let down some individuals and some groups ( can we say machine gunner's back in 86). But I feel that the NRA has made quite a few strides in this area also. CCW reform and not allowing the Assualt weapon's ban to be extended on the back of the Lawfull Arm's in Commerce act.
Yes other group's such as th GAO are good but I think we all need to be NRA member's to show unity against the antigunner's. If we could be at 6-10 million member's like we should we would be the 1200 pound gorilla and damned hard to beat. Let's face it we have swayed the last two presidential election's and the Democrat's know it. They might not talk about it but they know it. Just my two cent's but I do think you should join.
