Trying to make the best of a bad situation here;
If we lose the fight and the situation in NY really does happen, we may be looking at a situation in about a year from now where NY'ers are unable to own certain semiauto rifles.

I have realized that, while I am pretty familiar with AR and AK type rifles, I'm ashamed to say that I know very little about any other semiauto rifles.

How about cheering us NY'ers up with a thread about semiautos that we will still be able to own if the worst realy does happen?

I look for adaptations to beat the rules of NY if this doesn't get overturned. An AR is pretty modular - a fixed magazine could be fitted and it could be loaded by popping the rear pin, pivoting the upper out of the way, and using a charger guide and stripper clips. The same thing can be done with an FAL, or you could just fit a charger guide equipped dust cover.

Is there any limit in the bill for a fixed magazine?
If not, the M1A could be readily adapted with a fixed magazine - charger guides exist already for them. The M1 Garand is probably also safe - no detachable magazines. If a detachable magazine AND one feature like a pistol grip is the issue, take the detachable magazine out of the equation and see what you can get away with.

Remington 7400 Browning BAR. not sure about the M1A,with no flash hider it should be like a mini 14. you can get an older winchester 100 or h & r 360 ultra,hk made an ugly semi auto in 30-06 only, forgot its name. There arent too many semi auto centerfires that arent military types.M1 garand? remington 597, ruger 10/22 gsg-5 browning bar 22,nylon 66 if your looking for a 22lr...

jb;

At this point I'm not certain NYS'ers will be able to keep any semi-auto rifle - even those the ATF has declared in the C&R domain regardless of caliber ! Same, IMO, goes for pistols.

OTOH, "playing out Gov. Cuomo's game" might well result in massive civil disobedience by armed individuals with constitutional law and precedent on their side ! IMO, most of NYS - and its a populace - exists at a far remove (politically, socially, and economically) from its urban enclave citizens. For decades these few bastions have dominated NYS politics, but thanks to Mr. Cuomo's overnight imposition of his hoplophobic edict, that may change. >MW

For .22lr, most any semi without a pistol grip would be OK, although you would need 7 round mags. So most versions of Rem 597, Ruger 10/22, Marlin 795, Mossberg 702, etc. The versions of those same rifles with a pistol grip are out - 597 VTR, 10/22 with Archangel kit, Mossberg 715, S&W 15-22, etc. Your NY native Remington 597 is a fine rifle to take your children to an Appleseed shoot with. Your NY native Remington 597 TVP is more suitable to being taken into your childrens school according to our elected representatives.

For centerfire, some Mini-14s, Rem 7400, a few others.

I think my Chicom SKS that I bought for about $98 years ago might be one of the most valuable items I own in NY today, second only to my house.

using a charger guide and stripper clips
By definition...a "large capacity ammunition feeding device means a magazine, belt, feed strip or similar device that has the capacity of, or that can be readily restored or converted to accept more than ten rounds of ammunition , or (B) contains more than seven rounds of ammunition."
Is a stripper clip a feed clip? Is an en bloc clip?
But....they may be legal as in this description:
A FEEDING DEVICE THAT IS A CURIO OR RELIC. A FEEDING DEVICE THAT IS A
CURIO OR RELIC IS DEFINED AS A DEVICE THAT (I) WAS MANUFACTURED AT LEAST
FIFTY YEARS PRIOR TO THE CURRENT DATE, (II) IS ONLY CAPABLE OF BEING
USED EXCLUSIVELY IN A FIREARM, RIFLE, OR SHOTGUN THAT WAS MANUFACTURED
AT LEAST FIFTY YEARS PRIOR TO THE CURRENT DATE, BUT NOT INCLUDING REPLI
CAS THEREOF, (III) IS POSSESSED BY AN INDIVIDUAL WHO IS NOT PROHIBITED

If it comes to registering clips, and there is no cost to the individual to register their clips, I hope someone has a box of several thousand SKS stripper clips to plop down on the table. The look on the official's face would be priceless when he's told to register these clips

I feel most of this will be beat. I live in very rural upstate. I would pay no attention to their foolish new law. Who does he think he is Hitler ?
The problem for me is he's stopping mail order reloading supplies. Now I will have them sent to a family member in of all places New Jersey. Just crazy stuff. How would you like to have to have a pistol permit renewed after you've had it 30 years ? Just more people on the state payroll to force a group of folks like me that aren't bothering anyone. This governor is on a power trip and looks like a fool if you ask me.

I am looking at the Remington R25 in 7mm-08, which is NYS Gun Owner Discrimination Act of 2013 compliant. I was never interested in semi-auto rifles prior to passage of this "law". I am now very interested.

BTW, as I read the law, the Garand represents a problem. If you owned it and its clips (they love that word) prior to passage of the law, you may be okay provided you only ever place 7 rounds or less in the clip. If however you were to buy one now, you would have to permanently alter the clip so that it could only accept 7 rounds. Insanity.

Here's the full text of the POS law:

+1 about those ideas.

Registering stripper clips? For the love of all that is holy...

This is what happens when non-gun or anti-gun people write legislation with no understanding of or respect for gun owners and their rights.

You`d like some "cheering up" on semi-auto`s you say. Might I suggest the library.
That way you can learn all about the subject and more. Plus, stay warm at the same time.

In brief - otherwise we need to move this to the legal section - the deal on semi autos is:

It may, in addition to a detachable magazine, have 1 "feature" deemed "in common" with an "assault weapon" and be legal, but subject to registration, in NY. Those features, of which it may only have one whereas it was formerly two, are all in the 1994 "assault weapons" ban law. But, to simplify, if you have a pistol grip or thumb hole stock then the barrel may have nothing on it but a sight. Threads, bayonet lug, or, God forbid, a flash hider or muzzle brake - all haram.

Said semi auto rifles, if purchased prior to January 2013, may have 10 round magazines, but you may never put more than 7 rounds in them. If purchased after Jan 2013, said "assault weapons" may not have magazines capable of accepting more than 7 rounds. You will register said "assault weapons" with the State Police, who will then determine in a non-transparent and unpublished process whether you are "qualified" to own said "assault weapon".

So, if you intend to use your opposable thumb in a manner disapproved of by the State of New York, you may not have any forbidden do-dads on the barrel.

Not an "assault weapon". No need to register:

"Assault weapon". Must be registered...if you "qualify":

Banned "assault weapon":

Same rifle, a VEPR .308. Insanity.

How about a lever action? What does the "law" say about them? You could get one chambered for 38S/357M with a 20" barrel that will hold 10+1, or a 24" barrel w/ 12+1 capacity. Clearly these don't fit the EBR description perpetrated by our misinformed media and our politicians.

Or will the State force owners cut down the mag tube length so they can only hold six rounds?!
