I'm a student, prior military, on Long Island, going to school in Nassau county but living at home in Suffolk county. Before the coming school year, I'll be moving to a house shared with friends closer to school, so in Nassau county. I have a Suffolk-issued pistol permit (sportsman, because I can be trusted with missiles and machine guns and high explosives, but not to carry a handgun, but I digress) and three handguns on it. My parents are not moving, but none of them have any permits; the guns are specifically mine.

What do I do? Can the handguns come with me? Do they have to? Do I need to apply for a Nassau permit now? Do I need to notify SCPD?

Thanks in advance to anyone with sound advice.

You should just need to notify the permit office of your change on address. You can also transfer your permit to the new county.this will allow you to make any future amendments in your country of residence. It should be a pretty straight forward thing to get done. No new background investigation or anything like that. For a lot of good nys specific gun info check out www.nyfirearms.com

If you leave them at home you will have to lock them up if your parents don't have a license to possess...Your parents can't have access to them without a license to possess.

there is a long island specific firearms forum http://www.longislandfirearms.com/forum/
you might get a better answer there.
i think it would depend on wether you are changing your address on your drivers license etc and if you are claiming residency in nassau county. if you are just living off campus for the school year that may be different.
