NYC cops took my knife...

I have been to New Orleans my whole life. I grew up 45 minutes north of NO. I have never had any problems there, nor have I known anyone that had any problems there. I think those stats point more towards the bad parts of town that no one, other than residents of that neighborhood go into.

but is it ok to have a knife in your pocket in New York as long as it isn't clipped and showing?

It's NOT ok to show any part of the knife if you want to avoid being charged with this outdated law.

I'm not soured by them enforcing the law. I'm soured by the law, and by the leeway they seem to have in interpreting the gravity knife issue. I don't like effectively being threatened with arrest for possessing something that is legal when a cop feels like it, and illegal when he doesn't.

And yes, they do random searches beyond just landmarks. Subways, for instance. It seems to come and go with the latest terrorist threat...

Ok, let's get some facts straight. The NYC subway system is not a "public place" you must pay to use it and you can be removed or denied entrance at any time for any reason. It's the same as an airport. As much of a public place as it may seem, it is not a place where you can demand to be allowed to roam around freely.
When they have random searches in the subways they will always be at the entrance and you are free to turn around and walk out, just like in an airport. It's not like they are randomly grabbing people on the platform and frisking them, as bad as NYC is, it still must abide by the 4th amendment.

Yes it's totally absurd to have enforced a BS law like that, the simple fact remains that he did violate it. Ignorance is not a defense in court.
And if you didn't get a property receipt for the confiscated knife when he took it from you, I would go to the precinct and file a complaint. The cops name, shield number and command will be on the summons.

Wish i was in the land of cotton old times there are not forgotten look away look away look away Dixieland oh wait I am in Arkansas!
