For years my wife has wanted to go to NYC for a fall for a vacation. I'm going to hate being without my firearm. It actually makes me dread the trip in a way. I'm not super paranoid but I'm used to carrying a firearm. Anyone else get these feelings of vulnerability when traveling to "gun free" areas?

No. I don't get those feelings because I refuse to go to states where I can't carry a firearm concealed. My wife is quite in step with my thinking.
This doesn't really affect our vacationing because we're generally looking to go somewhere remote or rural. Neither one of us has any desire to travel to "big cities".
My suggestion would be to either take the hit and go unarmed or talk the wife into vacationing somewhere else.

Just spent a week in Boston. Yeah, wasn't very excited about no-carry. Did the Freedom Trail, saw loads of American flags on homes while driving around, saw a couple of Gadsden Flags flying from overpasses, but didn't see a single gun shop the entire week. Sad.

Whatever you do don't go there with a firearm. I live in NY state and even my carry permit is absolutely no good in NYC. That place may as well be a foreign country when it comes to gun laws. I wouldn't go to NYC for anything even if I could legally carry there because they are so rabidly anti-gun that it's become some sort of frightening, socialist, totalitarian nightmare. Not the sort of environment where a gun guy could feel comfy.

I've walked through the Hell's Kitchen neighborhood, alone, at 12:15 a.m. and both felt perfectly safe and was perfectly safe.
I traveled without a gun before there was widespread concealed carry legislation. After concealed carry became commonplace, I still traveled without a gun. I'm not going to stop traveling because the place I'm going doesn't allow concealed carry.

I was born and raised in NYC, left there in 1972.
I guess the statute of limitations is over by now,so I will admit that I carried ALL THE TIME as an adult in the city
It actually did save my butt more than once.AND did not have to actually fire at all.
I now am a retired LEO,and allowed to EDC in all 50 states.
I refuse to go where it is a "real" gun free zone [ magnatometers at doors ].
I have seen too many instances of what happens in "gun free zones".
And hell yes,I am very sure that it wont happen when I am there --------------- BUT,not betting my life on that either.
The best advice I would offer is learn and practice to carry a cane [ act & look like you use it ] and also learn to train with it.

I carry edc, and dislike to be unarmed. But, for those forbidden places that I must go to keep the peace in the family...... I have a nice unoffensive assisted opening pocket knife (Kershaw leek).
For all the other places where everything is banned....(concerts, large sporting arenas, Chicago, NYC, etc etc....)
Just a couple martial arts/self defense classes can put you WAY ahead of the average street thug or punk. At least THAT hasn't been banned yet!
Now my I'm a 240lb anvil ringer...but a little 130lb gal with some good training can make you say uncle in a hurry.

I've been there many times, the last, a year ago. I'm always reluctant, but the city is unique and except for the liberal leanings, has a lot to enjoy.
Being in the crowd at Times Square, watching or skating at Bryant Park, deli food at a restaurant that existed for over 100 years, Turkish food in a Turkish neighborhood, West African food in Harlem, authentic German food in a German neighborhood are hard to do elsewhere. And if you rent a car, the fall leaves on trees in upstate NY on route 17 bring tourists from all over to see.
On the last trip, only one beggar insisted he deserved a handout, and recently a friend told me her wallet was stolen on the train (metro/subway).
I treat the city the same way I do trips to foreign countries and have everything important in a pouch under my pants. I also bring an engineering pen that is easily confused with a tactical pen.
Just keep up the situational awareness and learn the NYC walk.

In 1964, my parents took us on a family vacation to see the World's Fair. Being a pre-teen, there wasn't much outside the Fair to draw my attention or interest. Any of you remember "automats"?

In NYC you will be 'gun free', 'knife free', and 'pepper spray free'. And you definitely will have a duty to retreat if attacked.

I'd go if someone dragged me enough, and I'd probably find something to enjoy about it.
But, I'd certainly feel like something was missing, like driving without a seat belt. It would take a little bit to get over it, but I would.

I never leave home without my EDC. May be forced to leave it in the truck if my destination is a sitting duck zone but feel naked without it. I'm not one off those paranoids that think I may be attacked every time I leave the house, just that my pistol goes on the belt just like my Leatherman every morning. If I don't have it, something is missing. If I had to go to NYC to keep my wife happy I would.

NY is one of the greatest cities in the world, and it would be your loss to never visit it. It's also one of the safest cities in the US. When you get to Manhattan you will wonder what all the fuss was about.
It is not the NYC of the 70's the movies love to depict. Enjoy your trip, the people who dis it have probably never even been there. People who have never been in a larger crowd than a small town HS basketball game are probably your complainers.

Are you flying or driving? If you are driving you can take a long gun into New York State without any sort of license. I believe there are restrictions to taking a long gun into NYC without a NYC long gun license. You could stay in a suburb of NYC with your long gun. You cannot take handguns into New York without a license unless you are going there for an NRA sanctioned match. You can also bring pepper spray and a pocket knife I believe up to 4 inches long, even in checked luggage on commercial airline. I'd get a good can of Fox Labs or Sabre Red pepper spray. New York City actually has lower violent crime than a lot of big cities like Detroit, St Louis. There will be a lot to see there and it will be a good trip.

I recently took a trip into NY state to visit with an old shipmate of mine. It was bad enough just being in the state but into NYC ? Haven't been there in almost 40 years. No desire to return.

Nothing, it's all what we're used to. But I think someone from a large city would find it somewhat confining. Just as someone from a small town might find a large city overwhelming. Doesn't make one better than the other, in each you give up certain things to enjoy other things.
I have found myself guilty of feeling the NEED to carry since I got my permit some 8 years ago.
I do not believe that it is unwise to go armed everywhere one may be able to. I bop over to the grocery store, there is a .380 in my pocket. I'm sitting at a friend's very nice cabin typing this with a .45 on my hip.
However, I sometimes feel that my gun has become such an extension of myself that I feel more than naked without it...i feel anxious.
For the first 28 years of my life I carried a folding pocket knife and that was about it. I would have gone to NYC in a NY minute with nothing more than a Leatherman on my hip.
Would I go unarmed now? Of course. I would probably miss having a pistol in my pocket, but I honestly think my "kit" consisting of a multitool, a slip joint pocket knife, and a sturdy AA maglite would be more than enough.
Everything in that group of items has a purpose and isn't really perceived as a weapon.
