YUMA, Ariz — Illegal immigrants (search) threw rocks at a Border Patrol (search) helicopter, forcing the pilot to make an emergency landing when one of the rocks damaged the rotor, the agency said.

Neither the pilot nor the Border Patrol observer was injured.

The A-Star helicopter was two miles west of the U.S. Port of Entry (search) in Andrade, Calif., on Tuesday when a group of immigrants began throwing rocks at the aircraft.

One baseball-sized rock gashed the rotor, forcing the pilot to land nearby, said Michael Gramley, spokesman for the Border Patrol sector based in Yuma, Ariz.

Gramley said he did not know how high the helicopter was hovering when it was struck, but he said it was being repaired and is expected back in service soon.

After the incident, 17 people were apprehended for illegally crossing the border, and two of them were being investigated for smuggling. Ten immigrants evaded capture.

The investigation into the rock-throwing was continuing.

I think we should keep our eyes on NY, next they will be trying to get infantry anti-tank rockets maybe they could hit a boat going about 40 across the water with it. Maybe they should spend all that extra money on better training for their officers and spend more time getting involved with the people living in their perspective precincts.

Somehow I just know this won't be the end of this story.

Personally I don't think any PD needs a semi auto .50 or any .50 caliber rifle. The thought of them mounting it to a helicoptor and buzzing around NYC should set off alarms. This just has the makings of a bad story with an even worse ending.

I'm sure when they try again to ban them, they can have their SWAT team parade it around like they did for the L.A. City Council.

That statement regarding 1000 yard shots to stop boats is preposterous. It's done at pretty close range. A helicopter basically fly's parallel to the boat and the shooter puts a round in the engine. Same thing with cars.

Havn't the drug runners been armoring the engines (Inboard and outboard) beause of this. I also heard that they are stacking the drugs around the inboard engine as some improv armor. Basicly anything that will keep the engines running long enough for them to try and make an escape.
